While we thought the conflict between Aegon II and Rhaenyra over Viserys’ vacant throne would be more of a centerpiece to the season, we’ve instead come to see the show’s slower arc: Season 1, like a prologue of sorts, merely sets the stage for the two-year war that will decide the King of Westeros. (If you want to avoid Season 2 spoilers, stay away from articles summarizing the Dance of the Dragons.) Naturally, there are certain things that I cannot spoil in my review… but that would be to assume that I understood any of it in the first place. No, seriously, this wasn’t anywhere near as confusing as I thought it might be, so The Sandman will, effectively, take the Crown for that one, although I did spot Bill Patterson turning up in both.

The freshly-married couple of Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen will head to war with the newly-crowned King Aegon II. Much like the first season of House of the Dragon, new episodes of Season 2 are expected to premiere weekly on HBO and simultaneously onto Max - the newly-rebranded Warner Bros. streaming service, formerly HBO Max.

Sapochnik, who has experience directing six Game of Thrones episodes, including Hardhome, The Long Night, and The Battle of the Bastards, directed the pilot as well as additional episodes. House of the Dragon is Sapochnik's first project as part of an overarching deal, where he is expected to develop and produce a range of content for both HBO and the HBO Max streaming service. He will, however, be stepping away from House of the Dragon from its second season onward. The House of the Dragon is a HBO show on the HBO Max streaming service. It is based on some of the events from George RR Martin's Game of Thrones universe, specifically his companion novel Fire and Blood. It's separate from the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, which is the basis for the original series. The last scene of House of the Dragon Season 1 showed Daemon delivering the news to Rhaenyra — we did not actually hear this, but it's safe to assume this is what Daemon said. Rhaenyra shakily walked to the fireplace, turned around with a deadly glare, and the Dance of the Dragons is on! With such deliberate pacing, House of the Dragon seems poised for at least one more season and possibly more. It’s worth remembering that the events of the series, even after the time jumps, still puts the date over one hundred years before Daenerys Targaryen is even born—allowing for decades more of Targaryen drama, inbreeding, and dramatic conversation-ending hmmms.
