About this deal

Brings to vivid life an extraordinary woman… will appeal to all lovers of historical fiction. A story that deserves to be told and widely known.” Essie Fox Eleven years later his work is exhibited in Paris and his unparalleled talent finally recognised. The tireless efforts of one woman gave the world one of its greatest creative minds.

During the negotiations on the sale, Bonger had written to Jim Ede—a young curator at the National Gallery’s branch at Millbank (now Tate). “If you read the English translation of the letters, your enthusiasm would still increase”, she wrote. Finding a publisher was at the forefront of her mind. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for providing an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review*Mrs Van Gogh is a charming little woman, but it irritates me when someone gushes fanatically on a subject she knows nothing about, and although blinded by sentimentality still thinks she is adopting a strictly critical attitude. It is schoolgirlish twaddle, nothing more. [...] The work that Mrs Van Gogh would like best is the one that was the most bombastic and sentimental, the one that made her shed the most tears; she forgets that her sorrow is turning Vincent into a god." [16] Surprising, clever and beguiling, Mrs. Van Gogh is a Historical Fiction based on true people and events. Though we have all heard of the ingenious and disturbed Vincent Van Gogh, how much do we really know of Johanna Bonger who married Vincent's brother, Theo? This fascinating story is about love, loss, mental and physical illness and the tireless drive of a woman who strove to get Vincent's paintings noticed and keep them relevant. Mrs. Van Gogh is the story of Johanna Bonger, who becomes Mrs. Theo Van Gogh. The story is written from Jo's perspective, from the time she arrives in Paris to live with her brother, to just a few short years later when she makes it her mission to promote her brother-in-law's art so that he becomes world-renowned. I am a fan of historical fiction and thought from the description of this book it may be something I’d enjoy, although it’s fair to say I don’t really know much about Vincent Van Gogh or his brother Theo.

The only grief I actually feel is for my uncertain future and the fear that my parents will sell me to the next highest bidder.’ Caroline Cauchi is also known as Caroline Smailes, and Caroline Wallace. I have been reading and loving her books for many years now. She writes in such an eclectic style, contemporary fiction, experimental fiction, and now, with Mrs Van Gogh, she's penned a wonderful, vibrant and utterly engrossing novel of historical fiction.

Van Gogh, Theo, Johanna van Gogh-Bonger. Brief Happiness: The Correspondence of Theo Van Gogh and Jo Bonger. W Books 2000. Brings to vivid life an extraordinary woman… will appeal to all lovers of historical fiction. A story that deserves to be told and widely known.” Essie Fox What is the Genre of Mrs Van Gogh by Caroline Cauchi? This book covers a small time frame...only a few years from Jo arriving in Paris, meeting and marrying Theo, having his child, the death of Vincent and then the death of her husband. I was thoroughly absorbed and loved learning of another little known remarkable women, before Caroline Cauchi was herself inspired and took the time to thoroughly research, then stitch in a fictional web of story line, to produce the beautiful book. If it takes until my very last breath, one day, every single artist, art lover and art critic in the world will know the name Vincent van Gogh.’ He laughs. ‘You’re as mad as the earless painter.’ I would think it dreadful to have to say at the end of my life: “I’ve actually lived for nothing, I have achieved nothing great or noble”…’

Marta Molnar, The Secret Life of Sunflowers: A gripping, inspiring novel based on the true story of Johanna Bonger, Vincent van Gogh's sister-in-law. ISBN 978-1940627496 Mi è bastato vedere la copertina per capire che questo libro doveva essere mio. Da estimatrice di Van Gogh non potevo esimermi, e infatti sono venuta a conoscenza di molte cose, alcune anche un po' scomode. She was successful in her quest as the paintings have sold for millions and millions of pounds and his art continues to be studied, vilified and admired. However, Vincent died penniless.
