Lord and Miller went on to direct bangers like The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street, as well as produce the Academy Award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, while Bill Lawrence has most recently co-created and served as showrunner on Ted Lasso and Shrinking. Joy accuses Mallory of sending the note. At the campfire, Kate tells a "ghost story" about her abduction, using a character named Annabelle, and blames the adults for putting her in Martin's path. Later, Kate listens to tapes of her therapy sessions to catch inconsistencies. In a recording, she describes meeting "Annabelle" near the end of her abduction but cannot recall who that is. Writer Willy Russell had his name removed from the credits as he thought the lead actors were too old to play 16-year olds and that Kidder's Welsh retreat was overly glamorous. There is some truth in this, but as filmed the script still boasts a strong mytho-poetic resonance, for instance in the almost totemic role of Billy's knife which he eventually discards under Kidder's guidance but which in Rabbit's hands leads to death and destruction. The violent and abrupt ending is bleak, highly melodramatic and certainly cruel, though it also shows Billy taking his life in his hands and finally becoming responsible for it.
