About this deal

Our unique copper stills are charged with a fermented barley 'wash'. This is distilled to produce a flavourful spirit of extraordinary strength and purity which is married with water from the Brecon Beacons before maturing in the finest ex-bourbon casks. Finish: Surprisingly long. Initial light brown sugar/molasses notes, along with peach and raisin. This is followed by a lingering sourness that builds over time. It’s actually not such a bad pairing, and I’m surprised to see such a light young whisky linger for so long. This Legend expression is part of their latest series of no-age-statement (NAS) single malt whiskies, along with Myth and Celt. All are bottled at 41% ABV. There is some evidence that the Welsh practised distillation as early as the fourth century. Allegedly, Reaullt Hir distilled on Bardsey Island around this time. The early drink was distilled from barley, yeast and honey.

More Alternatives…

In the mouth: It’s pretty thin on the palate. There is more lemon, apple, raisins and also some damp cardboard. The initial sweetness is soon overpowered by bitterness, which is prolonged and remains in the finish, with cream, hazelnut, drying oak spice and salt. Conclusions No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. Penderyn make award-winning whiskies and spirits at their distillery in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons National Park in South Wales. The area has spectacular mountain scenery, open moorland, farmland and valleys containing fast-flowing streams, rivers and waterfalls. Palate: Sweet arrival, with the icing sugar moving more towards molasses now – plus a candy apple sugar coating. Peach and pear, plus those tart apples (think early-season Macintosh). Dark grapes. Lemon citrus, including pith. You can really taste the madeira finishing here, complementing the malt nicely. Classic wood spices show up, but mild – mainly nutmeg. Has a tangy metallic taste on the swallow, with some bitterness immediately afterwards. No real burn, in keeping with the 41% ABV.

There’s a bit of alcohol burn and some slightly dusty wood tannins but overall a vast improvement from the Peated expression. Layers of delicate fruits, marzipan and lightly sweet breads with some baking spices for character make this enjoyable through the last. Legend has been matured in ex-bourbon American oak casks before being finished in oak barriques that previously held Madeira wine. Bottled at a slightly lower strength (and younger age) than the standard Penderyn Madeira Wood, you could consider this the latest expression of their classic “house style”. This is much better. The palate has a better balance and fuller flavour, possibly thanks to the higher ABV. I’d suggest this would be a better option if you want an introduction to the distillery, especially when you consider the relatively small price difference. Score: 6/10Penderyn Legend is the new name for our classic Penderyn house style at 41% abv, our single malt whisky with a light Madeira barrique finish. Their casking regime perhaps has more in common with the titans of Irish whiskey than their Scottish neighbors, leaning heavily on bourbon barrels for the primary maturation of their whiskies. This is also a tribute to the rich history of distillation in the region. Evan Williams, the iconic bourbon producer, was of Welsh extractation and his family had a distillery in Pembrokeshire . Penderyn uses a large number of Evan Williams bourbon barrels for its primary maturation, keeping the cycle (and history) alive. Penderyn continues to grow. In 2014, an expansion to the distillery was put in motion, with a pair of pot stills, a copper pot still and mashing facilities being commissioned. Two new distilleries are opening soon, one in the north and one in Swansea in the south, and it has begun to make serious inroads into the export market – having recently gone into China, Japan, Russia and the US.
