It’s not very often that a sequel to an action movie asks its hero to deal with the real world consequences of what they did in the first film. As Police Story 2 opens (well, following a montage of all the most awesome bits from the previous film), we find Chan Ka-kui demoted to traffic duty because of immense amounts his heroics cost the city in damages, and his old foe Chu Tao out on compassionate release, having been given months to live. Chu Tao’s goons threaten both Ka-kui and his still put upon girlfriend May (a returning Maggie Cheung), but his attention is soon taken up by a bomber threatening a major company. Aside from the quality of the action, the extra features in this box set are very impressive. Just about every audio option you could wish for is available as well as various different cuts of each movie, and a selection of deleted and alternate scenes, some of which are debuting in the UK for the very first time. POLICE STORY (1985) 4K (2160p) UHD presentation of the original Hong Kong theatrical cut [100 mins] Officer Chan Ka Kui (Chan) is a detective in the Hong Kong police force and a member of “Operation Boar Hunt” a task force brought together to take down drug/crime lord Chu Tao (Chor Yuen, The Seventh Curse, Hong Kong Graffiti). Headed by Supt. Raymond Li (Kwok-Hung Lam, Project A 2), he sets up a sting for Tao who is holed up in a shanty town just outside Hong Kong. Worldwide UHD debuts for all three films, and the first time Police Story 3: Supercop has been available on home video in the UK since the VHS era Each disc in the set comes with two excellent audio commentaries from some familiar names like Frank Djeng, who is always enjoyable to listen and filled with knowledge on these films, as well as Arne Venema and Mike Leeder who have a great, casual banter together that make them very listenable. Additionally, there are multiple cuts of the films, from export cuts to original Hong Kong Cuts and more (the alternate cuts are all in HD). So, Eureka has come through once again with a must-have collectible set for these classics.

In my original review of Police Story 3, I stated it was absolutely crying out for a restoration and re-release. In fact, I still have my original VHS version so I can watch it uncut! Not only has my prayer been answered, it has been delivered in glorious, ultra-high definition 4K in this new box set!

I'm thrilled to hear that the 116 min test screening v… If you need any convincing about how good Police Story 3: Super Cop is, then know that Quentin Tarantino ranks the movie as one of the greatest action epics of all time, and who could argue with praise like that? The plot has returned to a simpler, more direct style but, unlike the first movie, there is actually a plot here, and one that gives its two leads a chance to shine with their fighting skills and their acting. Each film in the collection is supplied with the original Cantonese Mono in LPCM 1.0, an English dub in LPCM 1.0, and Cantonese DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, except Police Story 3 which comes with the Cantonese Mono, Cantonese Stereo Home Video Mix LPCM 2.0, English Mono, and a Cantonese Dolby Atmos mix.

This film is a clinic in how to stage, shoot and cut action. Every element is so meticulous and even when it goes wrong (as in a bus stunt at the start), the crew keeps things running for an even greater impact. There is perhaps no better summation of Police Story than its centrepiece stunt, when Chan slides down a pole lined with (lit) lightbulbs. We see it three times in the film and once in the outtakes, so every time I watch the film, I see it four times. I still can’t believe my eyes. Most fans will be wondering just where you go from the 2018 4K remastered Blu-rays that Eureka released, because they were - at least at the time - comfortably the definitive way to watch the first two movies, bringing them to our screens (and to the correct aspect ratio) in stunning style, afforded a revitalisation that, whilst hardly concealing the minimalist budget of these movies, still gave them a new lease of life. For many, it was like watching them for the first time, a transformation from full-screen, soft, possibly wrong cuts to give us the Police Story movies like never seen before.
