About this deal

Max’s life in the 1980s was also interesting although I’m not sure I was quite as invested in his story and the reasons for his restlessness. Maybe I’m not a believer in what this book purports to be about although I could see it would be a comforting idea for those who have lost people. If you like historical romance with a bit of a spiritual feel, this is the book for you. In the 1940s Florence and her husband are separated by World War 2 having met and married just before hostilities started. An old lady in Australia receives an unusual letter in the 1990s and Max has some strange feelings about past lives in 1988- how do these three strands of plot come together? Inspired by a friend’s (Simon) story about reincarnation and the possibility that we may have lived before, author Montefiore has penned an incredible multi timeline (1944, 1988 and 1995) where the thread of Simon’s spiritual adventure is woven throughout. It doesn’t matter whether you believe in past lives or not, this can be simply enjoyed as a wonderful story. This was a truly captivating read. I began with curiosity and trepidation but finished with an open mind. Montefiore is an auto-read author for me and this book confirms why I love her work so much.

This book really explored the idea of reincarnation and the esoteric. It was quite challenging in some parts, but done quite gently so that no one would feel like they couldn't carry on reading if it clashed with their belief system. I liked the story but a lot of the beliefs content was not really my cup of tea. 3.5 rounded up to 4. What follows is a very lovely and heartbreaking novel about family and love and memory—what it means when your entire identity is made up of moments you can’t recall, when you can no longer remember those you’ve spent your entire life with. Montefiore expertly crafts complex relationships between the family members and their surrounding village people. This is my second Montefiore novel, and I absolutely adore how she writes her characters—they are all charming and messy and lovely. Florence receives a letter from someone she has never met, who lives on the other side of the world. This stranger says he remembers a life that belonged to another before him. Could this be the one person Florence has waited over fifty years to meet again? Since childhood Max has suffered from a recurring nightmare. Surrounded by the horrific chaos of World War Two, he has an urgent mission he knows he must complete. But time after time, the dream ends with him awaking in terror, his heart pounding from the horror of the battlefield. Desperate to understand why he is haunted by such terrible visions, Max embarks on a journey that leads him to Cornwall and a man named Rupert Dash. In diesem Fall ist das englischsprachige Original („Here and Now“) treffender. I also feel this way about the other members of Marigold's family. Dennis just has a heart fo gold and you can tell he is absolutely besotted by his wife. I enjoyed meeting Daisy and Suze. I wasn't sure about them to begin with but their lives are very real and very like my own and I totally warmed to them and lived this whole story line through their eyes. Then we have Nan who is definitely hard to like but when you get down to the roots of her ways, you can see that she does have her daughter's best interests at heart.

The synopsis adds: “Over two hundred years ago, in the dark of night, a child vanished from his bed never to be seen again – and Pixie must discover the truth of those final moonlit hours. As the story undulates between the past and the present, secrets are revealed, love affairs exposed and, ultimately, Pixie will be forced to make a devastating choice that will change everything.”
