About this deal

The collaboration follows a Double Cask release last year that was finished for 30 days in casks used in the making of Buchanan’s Blended Scotch Whisky, the first innovation from Don Julio in seven years. “It was a great way to showcase some experimentation with cask options available within the Diageo portfolio,” as de Colsa tells us. “For that one, I worked to match the flavor of both spirits — notes of apples and honey. Lagavulin is fuller bodied and bolder; there, I worked to contrast the freshness of the agave against the dryness of the peat.” If you are using a blowtorch, you will need to light the wood on fire and then hold the blowtorch over the drink. Be careful not to hold the blowtorch in one place for too long, or the drink will start to burn.

As the iconic Islay malt, Lagavulin embodies the finest, pungent flavors native to the region,” says de Colsa. Yes, pungent — the Islay whiskies are decidedly bold and smoky. Blanco or silver — call it what you will — but this is your entry-level tequila. If you insist on slamming, this is generally what you’ll want to do it with. Diamond-clear and un-aged, the best examples are fresh and zippy with a citrus spike. Some cheaper bottles will burn, but we’ve bypassed those for small-batch tequilas that are silky smooth. Reposado We recruited a panel of 10 testers, made up of WSET-trained experts and tequila fans, to give their thoughts on 40 blanco, reposado and añejo tequilas. Each was tried neat and then followed by some water to dilute and soften the alcohol, bringing out the more nuanced flavours. The ultra-premium Tequila produced by Dobel combines Tequila making tradition with innovation. They’ve crossed a few world firsts of there list such as with Humito - the world’s first smoked silver tequila. The lion’s share of mezcal is produced in the region of Oaxaca. There’s even a popular saying in these parts: “Para todo mal, mezcal, y para todo bien, también.” That translates to: “For everything bad, mezcal, and for everything good as well.” Otherwise, mezcal is officially distilled in the following regions: Durango, Guanajuato, Guerrero, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas, Michoacan, and Puebla. To qualify as mezcal, the spirit must also meet Norma Oficial Mexicana (NOM) regulations. What’s the Difference Between Tequila and Mezcal?Smoky mezcal is a type of mezcal that is made with a smoky flavor. The smokiness comes from the use of wood-fired ovens, which gives the mezcal a smoky flavor and aroma. Tequila is made specifically with blue agave, it’s made by steaming the agave before distilling it in copper pots, and it’s made in different regions of Mexico than mezcal. Mezcal not only pre-dates tequila, but all tequila is actually a form of mezcal (and not vice-versa). Like mezcal, tequila is made from the agave plant and double-distilled. Both liquors can also be aged after distillation for various periods of time, or not aged at all. Similarities notwithstanding, mezcal and tequila walk their own separate paths, something that becomes self-evident as soon as you compare the taste. If you like spirits which take on the flavours of the barrels they’ve been aged in, then 1800 Anejo is the tequila for you. A combination of French and American oak has muted the fresh grass and vegetal agave flavours of younger tequilas and brought in toasty spices and vanilla, coated in a honey and butterscotch sweetness. Place the required amount of tequila in a glass bottle. I usually only smoke 1/2 cup at a time if I’m only making it for the two of us.

While not every version of Mexico’s most-imbibed spirit is imbued with smoky flavors, the most heavily smoked mezcals garner the most diehard fans. There’s a whiff of danger, there—and a seductively rich scent that can vary from burning herbs, to natural woodfire, to barbecued meats. Here’s a video tutorial that I love which uses an old coffee maker to make a DIY cold smoker. I have not made this myself, but I think it’s very clever!Expect satisfying bouquet of sweet caramel flavours with honey top notes, layered with the essence of fresh cut mesquite wood. At this point, you might see how Lone River Ranch Water is the perfect fit for this Smoked Tequila Lime Burnt Ends recipe. I used their original seltzer, made with agave nectar and lime, along with some tequila and lime. Again, the sweet and citrus notes this adds to the burn ends is incredible. It brings a light freshness to the dish that would have been lost otherwise.
