Such a deliciously creepy, unsettling read… a melancholic gothic triumph. Gave me all the same feelings as one of my most favourite books ever, Frankenstein' Jennifer Saint, bestselling author of Ariadne Set in a historical moment where science and spiritualism meet, The Spirit Engineer is an ingeniously plotted debut novel’ Sarah Burton, author of The Strange Adventures of H West notes that The Spirit Engineer is “a very soulful, deep book, but about a rip-roaring dramatic and twisted story.” The Spirit Engineer is available to buy now. The Spirit Engineer also has some earthy humour which not everyone will appreciate. But the book is far from light-hearted.
It tells the story of Professor Crawford, who is not a particularly likeable man (& forgive me for saying this, but I’m not in that camp that says you can’t enjoy a book with an unlikeable character - you most certainly can!). A man of engineering and science, he is sceptical about the world of spirits and seeks to prove its nonsense.The plot is fast and evenly-paced. Part of the reason that I couldn’t stop reading this book is because there is always something chilling, or hectic, or haunting happening. There are several twists near the end that just left me gasping (one of which I saw coming a mile away but one that completely blind-sided me!) It had me thinking about the story long after I had finished reading it. Brilliant, haunting characters Kathleen Goligher was born in Belfast on the 27th June 1898, according to her birth certificate. She was one of five children, all of them cramped together in a string of small terraces, moving almost every year of Kathleen’s early life. Still, though the Goligher family’s quarters were small, Belfast prided itself on far better living standards than the tenement houses found in other British industrial cities such as Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow or Manchester.
In the case of the Goligher Circle, some might find it curious that a handy ship’s plumber and his poor wife should be managing their young sister as a psychic for money (they were paid by Crawford from 1919 and by Fournier d’Albe), and having spoken to Kathleen’s living descendants, it seems Rebecca Morrison (nee Goligher) was considered – I paraphrase here – a somewhat frosty character, not beloved by Kathleen and her other relatives later in life. Kathleen’s family are absolutely clear that she was in no way a seeker of the spotlight later in life; her public performances having switched from communion with the dead to ballroom dancing with her husband at company functions.
If you can't tell already, I really enjoyed this one. Thank you so much to the publisher for the copy in exchange for an honest review. I couldn't recommend this book more.The Spirit Engineer by A. J. West brilliantly twines the gothic & historical fiction genres together… A delight of a debut, an atmospheric and entirely gripping chiller that calls to mind the best of M.R. James and E.F. Benson, without in any way paling in comparison' Billy O'Callaghan, author of Life Sentences There is a good idea for a book in The Spirit Engineer. Unfortunately, I found that precious little about it landed for me.
