About this deal

The Damned transform London’s Palladium into a work of silent horror cinema, infused with the punk ethos that brought the band to life and the vampiric aesthetic that has sparked their live performances for decades. a b "A Night of a Thousand Vampires". Official Music Video Chart Top 50. 30 October 2022 . Retrieved 20 June 2023. On October 28th, 2019, The Damned took the stage at London’s prestigious Palladium Theatre for a very special immersive musical and theatrical experience – performing songs of their 40-year rich catalogue. A true event from showmen supreme, it was a historic night in the history of a storied band and a special evening for fans and band alike. It was also a fond farewell for drummer Pinch, his final gig with his compadres after 20 years. A Night Of A Thousand Vampires` was a well thought out and executed occasion and watching this show was a totally immersive experience both visually and aurally and really made me feel saddened that i`d not actually attended the event. a b c d Golden, Audrey (26 October 2022). "The Damned: A Night Of A Thousand Vampires – film review". Louder Than War . Retrieved 20 June 2023.

In directing, Martin Gooch relies on customary forms of the concert film: cameras capture a long shot of the stage in full, along with close-ups of Captain Sensible stage right, Paul Gray on bass and Monty Oxymoron on keys stage left, and Pinch on drums up above. Yet Gooch scatters traces of the classic horror genre throughout — the film, like The Damned, is never just one thing. New Noise Magazine described the album as a "remarkable set" that includes much of the Damned's "darker, goth material." They felt that the band is "still playing at their best," and that the addition of strings and trumpet "just adds to the ghoulish atmosphere." Besides some of the band's own songs, they highlighted a cover of the Doors' " People Are Strange" and an "inspired medley" of " Neat Neat Neat" and Bauhaus' " Bela Lugosi's Dead." [1] We are delighted by a fluid blend of music, performance and cinematic imagery. There is the gothic violin duel, the ventriloquist dummy singing on Dave’s knee, before jumping off and running away, the murder of the man from Guinness. Quite literally, our cup runneth over with blood, gore and gags. I’m wondering how hot it must be for Dave, still in the coffin, as Pinch declares among his long list of thanks –“Dave Vanian, without whom all of this would not have happened”.

Side guide

First to appear is Monty Oxymoron to play the slow, haunting, piano introduction Beauty of the Beast. The band has asked everyone to help them set a Guinness World Record for having the most vampires assembled in one place. And virtually everyone is in costume. It also becomes apparent that many, if not most people have travelled great distances for A Night of a Thousand Vampires in this Grade 2 listed theatre in London’s West End. Vampira dancers and performers from The Circus of Horrors, who appear onstage in varying forms throughout the night, bring a bizarre and affecting beauty to the music of The Damned.

Just out in time for Halloween is this live show from The Damned, recorded in 2019. The live album is accompanied by a feature-length video with some lovely production. More than just a video of a run-of-the-mill gig, The Damned really pulled out the stops for the performance itself as well as this DVD release. Ross, Phil (4 November 2019). On October 28, 2019, the legendary goth punk band The Damned played a Halloween themed show at London’s legendary Palladium Theatre. Billed as A NIGHT OF A THOUSAND VAMPIRES, the band churned through a remarkable set that was heavy on some of their darker, goth material naturally.

Interestingly, in the original novel, as opposed to Van Helsing’s pre-prepared, sharpened wooden stake, Count Dracula is stabbed in the heart with a Bowie knife while being decapitated with a Kukri, before crumbling to dust. a b Sullivan, Damian (26 October 2022). Inside the Palladium as the band begins to play, the film shifts to colour, tinted with cool blue and disquieting green lighting, as if you might be watching a painstakingly hand-coloured print of Louis Feuillade’s Les Vampires (1915-1916). A camera is positioned to capture a long shot of the stage, a quite literal horror tableau vivant if you were to press pause. With Pinch positioned above the stage on drums, I’ve got to imagine Gooch, Vanian, and the rest of The Damned were thinking specifically about those silent film tableaus created by directors like F.W. Murnau. But A Night Of A Thousand Vampires couldn’t be mistaken for silent cinema: The Damned fill the Palladium with sounds to wake the dead. Following their formation in 1976, The Damned became the first UK punk band to officially release a single, “New Rose”, and an album Damned Damned Damned. With 10 studio albums and several UK charts singles, the band are pioneers who emerged from the London punk scene, earning an ever-expanding fan base fueled by legendary live shows.
