About this deal

Strong spices and wood aromas. Evolves to powerful red fruits with high alcohol. Water addition creates softer, sweeter notes of tropical fruit and vanilla spice. Sweet lengthy finish. That ethos has carried over into 2022, which brings the 125 th anniversary of the foundation of the distillery. To mark the passing of this milestone year the distillery of this milestone year the distillery commissioned Emily Hogarth an Edinburgh based illustrator and papercut artist to produce an artwork (more details here) which was then used to decorate the Tomatin 12 year old boxes. This approach flies in the face of the elitist campaigns of other big brands, where the special releases are so exclusive as to be unobtainable for the whisky drinkers who keep the brand turning over year on year. Macallan and Peter Blake spring to mind, but no doubt readers can add to that list. The nose is brilliant but there is not much development in the mouth. I’d guess this is a mix of sherry and bourbon casks, similar to the current 12 year old, but here the whisky is soft and has very well integrated flavours which delivers a little more sophistication than the current bottle. Score: 5/10

Ripe fruits throughout: apple, red berries, peaches, and plum with cinnamon, cranberry crumble. A hint of old leather enhances this soft easy-drinking, smoke-scented spicy dram. Light and lovely. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. Among Islay distillers, Laphroiag was the big winner, taking two Gold Outstanding medals for its 10 YO Sherry Oak Finish Single Malt Scotch Whisky and its Select Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Islay whiskies marry particularly well with sweet wine casks, producing expressions that are smoky and with distinct fruity and sweet notes. When I came to draft this review, I reflected on why we are often reluctant to look at the “lower end” of a particular distillery’s output. I am generally a fan of what Tomatin do, having written about the reasonable French Collection in which I gave an 8/10 to a Cadenhead’s bottling of Tomatin from a bourbon cask. I also found the Whisky Meets Sherryenticing. Whisky snobbery takes many forms: only drinking single casks, requiring cask strength whiskies, derision of young whiskies, etc. It can be quite wearying.Another unusual winner was a single malt Scotch whisky expression from The Lindores Company, one of Scotland’s newest whisky distilleries. The distillery is named for one of Scotland’s original 17th century distilleries at the Lindores Abbey. The Lindores Distilling Company, Single Malt Scotch Whisky was described by the judging panel as: In the mouth: Malty, oaky, very bourbon forward, actually my maximum amount of bourbon cask, then sherry sweetness arrives, bringing butter popcorn, fudgy traybake, charred sugar, toasted marshmallows, darker fruits like raisings and then baking spices and feeling a little raw. Conclusions: Without prejudice to the section Liability below, the Service may be temporarily unavailable during maintenance, updates, etc. We shall make reasonable efforts to inform you of any unavailability due to maintenance or updates. The company went bankrupt in 1906, and reopened under new ownership in 1909. After the liquidation of its owners in 1986, it was taken over by Japanese conglomerate Takara Shuzo and was renamed Tomatin Distillery Co Ltd. [2] It's owned by the Takara Shuzo company. Around eighty percent of Tomatin's whisky goes into blended whisky, including its own brands of Antiquary and Talisman.

Terrible efforts that at best are no better than blends and at worst bring down the reputation of the distillery. Richard Paterson, Master Blender The Dalmore and Panel Chair for the International Wines and Spirits ... [+] Competition Photo, courtesy International Wines and Spirits Competition

I have also tasted a number of dreadful independent bottlings, often overlong in finishing casks, where the Tomatin spirit has been bludgeoned to death. However, indie bottlings in bourbon are often great; their only challenge is meeting the price point delivered by the brand. Tomatin can be good at 40% ABV, better at 43%, and absolutely sings at 46%; I don’t believe it needs a cask strength presentation. All of this plays into Tomatin being one of the few distilleries where the official bottlings are my preference over independent releases. I met a chap through our day jobs, rather than whisky. We became friendly throughout COVID meeting for online MS Teams “coffee breaks,” eventually grabbing beers in person. A few weeks ago we arranged to do lunch and introduce our partners to each other. As I’m always fraught with social awkwardness anyway, I made the fateful mistake of arranging the meeting on the Scotland vs England rugby matchday. I felt sure we’d miss the match as a result; I’m not normally allowed to schedule anything in our house for very good reason.

The distillery operated with only two stills until 1958. Starting at that time, they began to add stills to increase production capacity, eventually reaching production of 12.5 million litres of whisky per year during the 1970s. Although in 1987 Tomatin was referred to as the largest malt distillery in Scotland, [3] stills have been dismantled since the mid-1980s, bringing their total capacity to just over 5 million litres, though as of 2007, they were only producing 2.5 million litres. [2] The Tomatin Legacy is a no age statement (NAS) expression that is matured in a combination of ex-Bourbon and Virgin Oak casks. The Tasting Note on the Tomatin Legacy described it as:

Distillery Exclusive whiskies now available from the shop

The Tomatin Legacy – which is a NAS release – refers to the important historical contribution that the distillery did for the town of the same name. It was the founding of the distillery that put the town on the map. Dozens of families came to live around the distillery, since it became their employer. On the nose: Fruit blossom, light stone fruits, deeper roasted pineapple, quite powerfully juicy and fruity, a little cream and vanilla fudge. If you buy a bottle of the Legacy, do yourself a favor and drink it on ice. I'm sure it's quite pleasant with ice and soda.

Cardhu Gold Reserve, Tamnavulin Double Cask – these Speysides suffer from one inescapable fact. At this price range they are beaten on both price and taste by the Aldi and Lidl Speysides. Tomatin translates from “Hill of the Juniper Bush” making this location ideal for illicit distilling with access to plenty of juniper wood which gives off no smoke while burning. Palate: Baby puke, astringent initial grip on taste buds followed by a "miller lite" finish with generous (or not so generous depending upon how you look a it) hints of the nose.

Tomatin 12 Year Old (1990s release) – Review

In the mouth: Red apples, red currants, a nice oaky mid-palate, malty and a little spicy toward the finish, mint chocolate too. The finish is quite short but also brings in an interesting fruity funk. Conclusions: You are responsible for all activities through your account.
