The very existence of this blog is an experiment in the use of educational technology. Personally I think it is ‘evolutionary’, but please feel free to disagree! While the primary focus of the blog started out targeting A-level sociology students specifically, I have since expanded the scope of the content and included a range of material that should be of relevance to students studying sociology more generally, history, economics, politics, business studies and education and both A-level and degree level, focussing more recently on critical analysis of contemporary news events and summaries of the latest social research and statistical releases.

The book follows the new 7191 specification more closely than all of the others – It uses the kind of ‘structure’ examiners are expecting to see in the exam, so it’s definitely a safe option – for example, the methods section is clearly broken up into Theoretical, Practical and Ethical Factors and there are solid sections on Methods in Context. It also has the most significant updates on the new areas in the specification – such as some reasonable material on globalization and migration, the ageing population, privatization and education, and the sociology of personal life, although the later section seems to have borrowed heavily from from edition 8 of Haralambos Support and challenge the full range of learners: the book offers the depth, detail and clarity that students need to analyse and evaluate at the highest levels, while regular Summary and Key terms boxes help consolidate understanding.

While a lot of the content is focused on the AQA A-level sociology specification, much of the substantive content will be relevant to other A-level specifications (just not the exam material, which is specifically for the AQA). Students studying under syllabuses should also find the revision notes and diagrams useful, but probably less so the exam advice, given that this is specific to the AQA. I believe blogging is one of the powerful forms of educational technology available for presenting the core knowledge relevant to A-level and degree level subjects in clearly structured, accessible and understandable format. As long as you have great syllabus notes and lots of past paper questions the rest is really up to you. If you want to score an A* or A grade you need to act like someone who’s going to score these grades.
