About this deal

Bonsoy is made mainly from organically grown soybeans, which contain only vegetable proteins and has no animal cholesterol content. A product of Japan, a country whose people have the longest lifespan in Asia, soymilk can be found in many homes where this milk shares the same status as rice on the table. No artificial additives and preservatives added. No added colours, chemicals or flavours. No added oils. No kombu (sea vegetables) added.

With all the advantages you can get from every glass of Bonsoy soymilk, there’s no stopping the habit of having this healthy, goody gulp at breakfast, or during your child’s recess time at school, in the office during breaks, and just about anywhere and anytime! Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. Bonsoy soy milk: information for medical practitioners. 24 December 2009. http://www.racgp.org.au/Content/NavigationMenu/News/Collegenews/BonSoySoyMilkInformation.pdf (accessed Apr 2010). An aliquot of Bonsoy milk was analysed for iodine content using a plasma mass spectrometer (Department of Biochemistry, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, NSW), which showed an iodine concentration of 25 000 μg/L. In comparison, the levels of iodine in other soy milks that were analysed ranged from 15 μg/L to 281 μg/L ( Box 2). The common practice by women from Japan and Korea of ingesting seaweed made into soup, sometimes in large quantities, to promote wellbeing in the mother and stimulate breast milk supply, does not appear to be widely known in the medical community. However, due to iodine transmission through breast milk, transient or even persistent hypothyroidism has been reported in neonates born to mothers who undertake this practice. 12 , 13 If left undiagnosed and untreated, neonatal hypothyroidism can have devastating clinical consequences, including impaired intellectual development. Although newborn screening tests will help to identify hypothyroidism during the first week of life, there is no subsequent routine screening of thyroid function in term babies whose TSH level may not increase until after 1 week of age, as seen in one of the neonatal cases described here and in a Korean study of preterm infants. 12In 2010, a soy milk product containing kombu seaweed was recalled following nine cases of people with thyroid problems. The product was subsequently reformulated to make it safe to consume and was returned to sale. The following information was provided at the time. There is no gluten in any of the ingredients used to make the Bonsoy Soy Milk. Can you buy Bonsoy in the UK?

Food and Health authorities today confirmed that Bonsoy soy milk, reformulated without kombu seaweed extract, could return to sale.

Some see it differently. “It’s just a hipster thing”, says James, a manager at TAP Coffee who tells me that people come in all the time asking if they use Bonsoy. “We could sell Bonsoy but then we’d have to charge an extra pound and it’s not worth it”. While dieters and cow-friends may love soya milk, coffee purists – and increasingly nutritionists – do not. “How do you make a good soya latte?” said one coffee know-it-all at the UK Aeropress Championships. “Start by throwing away the soya milk.”

Oat milk is a great choice for post-run recovery because of its carb, fibre and protein content. A 200ml glass provides approximately 10% of your daily fibre target, which is comparable to a serving of vegetables. It has less protein than cow’s milk but beats both nut and coconut milk hands down, and contains a similar number of calories to semi-skimmed milk. Coconut milk Some people have tried to make their own soymilk at home just as they made peanut butter and guava jelly. But health authorities have cautioned against preparing soymilk on your own at home due to some natural components in a soybean which, when not removed, can pose some health hazards. actively seeking a history of maternal seaweed consumption during pregnancy and lactation in cases of neonatal hypothyroidism . As Singapore’s trusted organic pioneer distributing Bonsoy since 1991, Nature’s Glory ensures that:This series of cases of thyroid dysfunction led to a national recall of Bonsoy milk on 24 December 2009, 7 and the distributer agreed to voluntary withdrawal of the product from sale in Australia. This brand of soy milk was fermented in seaweed, which is thought to improve the flavour, and is promoted as having wide-ranging health benefits. 1 The NSW Health alert for Bonsoy milk stated that in a child, ingestion of only 5 mL, and in an adult, only 30 mL, would exceed the safe upper limit of iodine intake. 8 , 9 It is unclear whether changes to the manufacturing process of the Bonsoy product may have increased its iodine content. However, after removal of kombu from the manufacturing process, the iodine content was reduced markedly (15 μg/L) and the product returned to the Australian market in April 2010. Upon arrival in Singapore, each batchis then tested for radiation and must pass safety standards before sale. Chung HR, Shin CH, Yang SW, et al.
