Retrieved May 25, 2021.The only area where I struggled a bit to connect with the story was that Cruella was used almost as an alter ego whenever Estella did something bad, like a ‘It wasn’t me, it was Cruella” kind of thing. As Estella got a little older, Cruella then became a mean voice in her head telling her would never have friends or love. This Cruella alter ego didn’t turn up very often in the story, but each time she did, it just read awkwardly for me. There was an instance, for example, where she gets into a fight with Horace and Jasper and when she goes to apologize to them later, they’re all “We know it wasn’t you, it was Cruella.” The ending of the book was also somewhat awkward for me for similar reasons. I just couldn’t exactly tell what Cruella was supposed to be. At first I thought maybe mental illness but, by the end, I had more questions than answers. Hopefully the movie will bring some clarity. Regardless if you are a fan of Cruella or not, this book will honestly have you entertained from start to finish. The plot is fast paced with constant moving situations and plot depths added as you go. I love the subtle introduction of Anita Darling and how she fits into Cruella’s life and their opinions of each other. Horace and Jasper were brilliantly written and you can see how their personalities tie into the 101 Dalmatian storyline that we all know well. Nicholas Britell composed the film's score. Cruella De Vil was raised in a wealthy home. Her mother was always more focused on wardrobe and style and making sure Cruella looked as good as possible - there was a status to maintain. Her father simply adored her - she was definitely a daddy's girl. Her father left the family fortune to Cruella as long as she never married or at least had her father take the De Vil family name (Cruella is the last of the family line). It seems like the film will probably be more visual and spectacle and the author wasn't sure how to translate that to the book. The novel is VERY bland and choppy, sequences don't seem to naturally flow into one another and characters are very stiff and wooden. Unfortunately, Delia’s family does not have the means to keep her love of fashion in the budget, so it becomes hard to keep up with the latest styles.
