About this deal

On three offences, of the attempted murder of Kyle Pearson, Bobby Harris and Michelle Pearson, to concurrent sentences of 25 years imprisonment. Zak Bolland, 26, and David Worrall, 28, were today sentenced for the murder of Michelle Pearson, 37, who died 20 months after they set fire to her home in December 2017. Bolland, who is not known to have ever had a job, was convicted of beating women twice, once in September 2014 and again two years later. Once he grabbed a woman by the hair and pulled her across a street. On another occasion, he punched a woman, grabbed her by the throat, threatening to burn down the house of his victim’s relative. The jurors weren’t told that she was convicted three times when she was 16 and 17 for threatening behaviour, robbery and battery.

Mr Reid said Bolland denies murder and says he is only guilty of manslaughter and was wrongly convicted of the murders in 2018.

'The courts must mark the taking of a life'

The men went into the house and made two petrol bombs using a large clear bottle and a smaller beer bottle. The prosecution say that if Michelle Pearson had died before that trial took place, the jury would undoubtedly have convicted Bolland and Worrall of the murder of Michelle Pearson. Both Bolland and Worrall were convicted of the attempted murder of Pearson and Greater Manchester police (GMP) said they would be reviewing the investigation and consulting with the Crown Prosecution Service in light of her death.

Two remorseless murderers will spend more time in prison... no sentence will ever be enough for the family of the mum and her four kids who died Shortly after midnight, Zak Bolland, David Worrall and the two other men walked the short distance to the home of Michelle Pearson.Zak Bolland, the sentence I pass is life imprisonment with a minimum term of 40 years from today before your release be considered. He couldn’t resist the temptation to torment the Pearson family again and so, just before 1am, he went round with David Worrall and two other pals who they had been partying with that night, threatening to break Kyle’s jaw and ‘do your house’.

Describing the moment he found out people had died in the fire, Bolland said: "Straight away my heart ripped out of my insides." They have appeared at Manchester Crown Court accused of murdering Ms Pearson after they allegedly threw two petrol bombs into her house just before 5am.I was talking about the grandkids, the youngest one. [Michelle] said 'where's my baby?' I said 'Lia'."

Accordingly the time you have served between the first trial and today will not reduce the minimum term. During legal argument in the absence of the jury, the court heard that Bolland said: “We should burn them out. If they get out of the cars, don’t give them a chance. Set them on fire.”

Key Events

Bolland threw a large petrol bomb into the house through a rear window as the family slept and it "exploded", trapping the victims upstairs, the court heard. She said: "It either had to come from me or the nurses. It was only because she [Michelle] asked me. She added: "We just wanted her to be, like, with the children because without the children, it ain't going to be Michelle." Courtney Brierley was found not guilty of the murders, but found guilty of the alternative of manslaughter in each case. She was cleared of three counts of attempted murder.
