About this deal

While there is no dust or waterproofing, Minirig says the Mini is “splashproof.” It’s a bummer the Mini isn’t waterproof as it would have been the ultimate travel speaker that you can use in the hotel or bring to the beach. Performance The MiniRig 3 is a portable, rechargeable speaker intended for life on the move. If you take your music with you to bars and booths around your city, then this device will ensure you never have to compromise on volume or sound quality. Clearly the long and thin stereo approach is more desirable for enhancing the audio when watching video on a laptop or any other occasion where you’ll be sat directly in front of the speaker/s but for just blasting out music while camping, gardening, cooking, partying in your hotel room, a single loudspeaker does the job just fine. Usually, when you see something as small as this compact device, it’s easy to assume that you’re going to miss out on functionality, sound stage, or volume.

Though small enough to take wherever you go, the MiniRig 3 delivers a sensational sound quality that’s wonderfully clean and balanced. Although you won’t get the same crispness as you’d get from a speaker with a dedicated tweeter, you get much more than you’d expect. Now we come to the point that’s likely to make or break your decision when it comes to purchasing the MiniRig 3. The Minirig Mini is an interesting proposition: the stark design will be appreciated by some, its small stature will be attractive to the space-conscious, and the sound is solid.

The sound signature is V-shaped with peaky highs and big lows, but if you desire a different tuning, you can cut the highs or lows with the EQ and expand the midrange to give an overall flatter profile. Tips for a better-sounding Bluetooth speaker. There are many things that make the MiniRig 3 well-worth your attention if you’re looking for something compact, durable, and brimming with power. The sound is full and rich, with lots of detail and minimal distortion. Even when you push the speaker to its total volume, it sounds incredible and results in a slight clipping of the bass instead of completely degrading the sound. The Bluetooth range was about 20m using either my Microsoft Surface Book 2, Pixel, or iPhone 8 and but it could also work just fine from 30m+ if conditions are optimal. Being within range, I have never experienced any dropping of signal when using any Minirig product.

You might notice audio occasionally cutting off from one unit if you have multiple devices connected. Although Bluetooth is available on these speakers, getting everything set up and working properly can be a real headache. There may be issues with lag and dropped connections to consider. Connectivity Credit: Minirigs The app does have the occasional bug to worry about, and Bluetooth isn’t perfect, but there are a lot of great bonuses that help to make up for this. It’s nice to be able to experiment with EQ components and other features within the app. However, you can use a wiring option instead if you prefer more stability. The wiring connections mean that you can chain as many speakers as you like, without having to rely on Bluetooth. The way it works is your link in the subunit to the speaker and should significantly boost the low end. As I said I haven’t had the chance to play with one of these, but it could be an exciting addition if you don’t mind carrying the extra weight.Sound QualityOne of the standout features of the original speaker was the exceptional build quality. That continues with the new model. It's a seriously well-made bit of kit. The speaker consists of a single 52mm diaphragm driver housed in a tubular metal chassis with a metal grill outside. It's powered by an internal 15w amp. With so many Bluetooth speakers now on the market, it can be hard to choose one. Many are laden with features, and others can be had at super low prices. The most important thing to me is sound, and for the life of me, I can’t think of anything this size that sounds even close to being this good. Really to get something better sounding, you are looking at getting the Minirig 3.

It sounds transparent and open with air about it, and the bass can hit seriously hard. All-out sub-bass is not on the level of a full-size speaker, but it blows away anything from B&O or Bose.

Compared to similarly-priced products, such as the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom, it isn’t quite as insightful across the board. We’d like more texture to each instrument, so this speaker can really show off the shimmer of cymbals or the throbs of bass guitars. MiniRig is one of the best-known brands on the market for customers in search of a compact, powerful speaker tech. You wouldn’t be wrong if you mistook the Minirig 3 for the original model or the second because Minirig doesn’t change their design, and there is an excellent reason. The speaker, in my opinion, is perfect the way it is and built better than any other on the market. Yes, the Bang & Olufsen Bluetooth speakers are prettier to look at than many others, but they are nowhere near as robust and compact as the Minirig 3’s chassis.
