About this deal

Through – From beginning to end or from one side to the other, often used in the context of travel or progress. Roald Dahl was a British novelist, short story writer and screenwriter of Norwegian descent, who rose to prominence in the 1940's with works for both children and adults, and became one of the world's bestselling authors. Muumuu – A loose, flowy dress often worn by women in Hawaii, often made from lightweight cotton or other breathable fabrics. Overview – A summary or general understanding of a topic or situation, often used in the context of business or education.

The Oxford Roald Dahl Dictionary gives two definitions of funny: something that “makes you laugh or smile” and something that is “strange or surprising.”“Funny bits” are at the center of Matilda but not always amusing. The book chronicles Matilda’s fall from innocence and gain of self-knowledge, and funny shifts from the first to the second definition over the course of the novel. Grew – The past tense of “grow,” often used to describe the process of plants or animals getting larger or more mature. Queue – A line or sequence of people or objects waiting for something, often used in the context of shopping or transportation. Also look out for new Roald Dahl apps in the App store and Google Play- including the disgusting TWIT OR MISS! and HOUSE OF TWITS inspired by the revolting Twits.

Roald Dahl is one of my favorite authors, and as a child, I re-read his books over and over. And from time to time as an adult, I re-read some of my favorites, such as Matilda, The Witches, and The BFG. Recently, I felt the urge to re-read some of the books I was less familiar with, such as Rhyme Stew. Ku – A Japanese term meaning “void” or “emptiness,” often used in the context of philosophy or spirituality.

Canoe – A narrow, lightweight boat designed for use on rivers or lakes, often used for recreation or fishing. Taboo – A social or cultural prohibition or restriction, often used in the context of customs or traditions. Our sympathies lie with the echidna, not with the rotten kid, and we cheer at the end when the beast turns on Roy for dessert. Rue – To regret or feel remorse for something, often used in the context of personal or professional relationships. Overdrew – To withdraw more money from a bank account than is available, often resulting in fees or penalties.

Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves - Ali Baba realises he can open doors by saying Open Sesame, so goes to a posh hotel and opens all the doors to see what's going on inside. The pig creates a blazon to himself: he identifies all his wonderful body parts and makes himself seem like a porcine paragon, only to lament that all these excellent components are destined for the marketplace. Because the pig doesn’t want to be sliced and diced into products, he kills the farmer. It’s a Marxist justification of eating the hand that’s only feeding you to fatten you up for the slaughterhouse. (We could feel a twinge of guilt for Farmer Bland, but we don’t; after all, he’s Farmer Bland, not Farmer Grand.) Overshoe – A type of shoe worn over regular shoes to protect them from dirt or rain, often used in the context of work or outdoor activities.

Select a format:

Hitherto – Up until now or until a particular point in time, often used in the context of history or literature. Chu – A Chinese surname or a Japanese term meaning “kiss,” often used in the context of romantic relationships. I gave this book four stars because I feel that it is a good way to help children learn about rhymes, and rhymes which can be made into stories. They are amusing and commendable rhymes. It's no surprise that his sinister version of "Hansel and Gretel" is my favorite. Something unique about this one is this little addition toward the end: I don’t recall anything about Rhyme Stew, as I probably only read it a couple of times, decades ago, so it’s like re-reading it for the first time. I probably loved it as an 8 year old, but nearly 30 years later, not so much. Revolting Rhymes is definitely much better.

Eschew – To avoid or abstain from something, often used in the context of moral or ethical behavior. Coo – A soft, murmuring sound made by doves or other birds, often used to express affection or comfort. Clue – A piece of information that helps solve a mystery or puzzle, often used in the context of detective stories or games. Outgrew – To grow too big for something or to become more mature than something, often used in the context of physical or emotional growth.Tattoo – A permanent design or image made by injecting ink into the skin, often used in the context of body art or personal expression. You can listen to all of Roald Dahl's stories on Puffin audiobooks read by some very famous voices, including Kate Winslet, David Walliams and Steven Fry - plus there are added squelchy soundeffects from Pinewood Studios!
