Even before it came out of the box, this system was already impressing the video team and getting them hyped to use it. However, in use, you soon get used the layout but would recommend adding an arm to help with the handling. I use the Ronin-S at least once a week, and the additional side grip is the one accessory I couldn’t now do without. Compared with Ronin-S, the motors of DJI RS 2 are about 20% more powerful, while the gimbal weight is reduced by about 25%. Equipped with a 1.4-inch full-color touchscreen and redesigned built-in front dial, DJI RS 2 also supports more accessories than the Ronin-S. While DJI RS 2 might look similar to its predecessor, there are some key design differences that you should be aware of. The two most notable DJI RS 2 upgrades are a 1.4-inch full-color touchscreen and a carbon-fiber construction. Carbon fiber not only decreases the overall device weight, it also allows for heavier payloads, up to 4.5 kg (10 lbs) tested. DJI RS 2 also has a more ergonomic overall look and feel, which rounds a gimbal that is lighter, supports heavier cameras, and is easy than ever to use. DJI RS 2 introduces a new feature that allows operators to instantly switch to portrait mode. This is a huge benefit for those working on social media content and other creative applications.
Stabilization is easily the most essential feature of DJI Ronin products as it allows users to get smooth footage for professional-level results. And while 3-axis stabilization is features on both Ronin gimbals, DJI has improved the stabilization technology for DJI RS 2. Out of the box, the set up was incredibly straight forward and easy. We tried out the focus motor and it was nice to control it from the scroll wheel. If I would have connected another scroll wheel I could have had one scroll wheel control the motor and the built-in wheel control a setting in the camera. Very useful on long shoots and run & gun moments. The main changes are that the motors are 20% more powerful and it cut overall weight by 25%. Both things make a dramatic difference in performance. For the majority of the test, I added the focus servo, which was easy to fit. Just attach the gear band around the lens, then all the rods and attachments you need to fit the focus motor are in the box. This combo doesn’t come close to maxing out its motors, but no matter what we put on it, the motors gave no lag or resistance/strain. Unless you’re getting into big cinema rigs, the Ronin RS 2 seems capable of handling any dslr or mirrorless combo you can throw at it. Setup Is Easy As I mentioned previously, the smaller size and lighter weight made it easier to maintain stamina over a long day of shooting 4-6 hours at a time. On paper, the size and weight difference doesn’t seem like much, but over the course of a full day of shooting the reduced payload was definitely noticeable and a welcome update! The most significant update aside from the dramatic design change is the payload which has increased from 3.6kg to 4.5kg. It’s also lighter than the Ronin-S coming in at 1kg 0.81kg lighter.
The DJI RS 2 is a mixed bag, on the one hand, the technology blasts the previous generation out of the water. It is beautifully designed, and the attention to detail makes you take note.
Backpack and Mobile Operating System
In use, the power of the small motor is incredible and enables you to easily capture that professional, smooth fluid motion that these devices have been designed to enable. Adding a touchscreen was incredibly helpful. It means you don’t have to dive into the mobile app to make some of the changes and can more easily make adjustments in the field. It also shows off the current modes and settings, which can be helpful if you have multiple operators for the same gimbal as there were only LED lights available.
