The Port Gaverne Hotel in Port Isaac has been voted Best Pub in the South West in the National Pub & Bar Awards 2018 (Image: Port Gaverne Hotel) Walkers, cyclists and even horse riders enjoy this convivial place as it's just 50 metres from the coast-to-coast Portreath to Devoran Mineral Tramways cycle path. The easy-going, roomy bar has an interesting wood-burner set halfway up one wall, a cushioned window seat, wall settles and a few bar stools around just three tables on stripped boards, and bar chairs by the counter. There's also an open fire. High chairs line the bar counter (and the tables here are reserved for those wanting just a drink and a chat) where they keep St Austell Tribute and a guest from Keltek or Phoenix on handpump and ten wines by the glass served by courteous staff. There's also an upstairs loft room for private hire.

When in this busy seaside town, our readers make their way here for a drink or a meal - and it's handy for the harbour. The open-plan, spreading bar has a relaxed atmosphere, all sorts of wooden chairs around scrubbed tables on bare floorboards, tartan banquettes on either side of the Victorian fireplace, a wall of barometers above a leather chesterfield sofa and some brown leather armchairs; also, fresh flowers and candles on tables and on the mantelpiece above the open fire. This place has been catering for travellers since it was built in the 12th century, and customers today are made just as welcome as they were all those hundreds of years ago. It's a pretty white-painted long house with a great deal of character. Penzance Potion No 9, Sharps Doom Bar and a changing guest beer on handpump, lots of wines by the glass, 80 malt whiskies and 11 gins. Leading off the bar is the conservatory family room and there's also a cosy bistro. The six acres of gardens are well worth a wander and offer plenty of seats and picnic-sets under large parasols. The pub itself has interconnected dining rooms with wide floorboards, painted farmhouse and other sturdy chairs around rustic wooden tables, wide stripped floorboards and immaculate pale paintwork; décor is minimal and includes a few pieces of artwork dotted about. You'll get a genuinely warm welcome here as well as a thoughtful choice of good food and drink. The unassuming and friendly bar, which is long and narrow, has a mix of pubby tables and seats, local photographs on pale blue plank panelling at one end and nice, mainly local prints (for sale) on walls above a coal-effect stove at the snug inner end; there's also a small front alcove. If you wish to eat here during peak times, you must book a table in advance as it's extremely popular with holidaymakers. The main door leads into a sizeable informal area with a pool table and plenty of cushioned wall seating; to the left, a light, airy dining room overlooks the terrace. Good Pub Guide review: Lovely beachside spot with sizeable sun terrace, five real ales and quite a choice of food This cheerful pub is the sort of place where everyone chats to everyone else, and customers include walkers with their dogs, windsurfers, locals in for a pint and a natter, and families meeting up for the popular Sunday lunches.

That said, if I find myself again in that Oxford wine bar, I might go for it again, unless the beer list includes something from Thornbridge, Brewdog or Sirencraft! It’s okay, and compared to something like Doombar, yes it’s crisp and pale, but there are plenty of really ‘exceptional’ pale ales out there. Just ask Thornbridge, Brewdog or Sirencraft.Derby County Football Club has named Molson Coors Beverage Company as its exclusive alcohol pouring rights partner for the 2023/24 season. Good Pub Guide review: Idyllically placed waterside inn with lots of atmosphere in beamed and flagstoned rooms, and all-day food. Good Pub Guide review: Granite-stone pub with rustic charm, seasonal food cooked by both licensees and a merry atmosphere Good Pub Guide review: Welcoming pub in small village, plenty of space for eating and drinking, Cornish ales, well liked food and seats on big front terrace.
