About this deal

Subbuteo was invented by Peter Adolph (1916–1994), who was demobbed from the Royal Air Force after the end of World War II. Searching for a new business opportunity he turned his attention to creating a new table-top football game. He adapted his game from Newfooty, a table football game that had been invented in 1929 by William Lane Keeling of Liverpool. He made numerous improvements, including changing the heavy lead bases under the model players to lighter materials, using for his prototype a button from his mother's coat and a washer. I decided that if one day I became a footballer, I would like to play in Scotland. After 10 years playing in Italy, an offer came from Glasgow. The first time I wore the Celtic shirt was emotional for me – I was like a child who has just received a big present.” Building your stadium, assembling your accessories, and painting your players will teach you some handy and highly transferrable DIY skills. Become a tactical mastermind the lists in the 1960s such as Oldham at 37 and Grimsby at ref 38. Even by the time of the heavyweight

Later, Sunderland (74-80), Lincoln (74-80), and Exeter City (75-77). Also Derry City (Ireland) (1996)In the late 1970s, a Sunday newspaper splashed on a damning article claiming that Subbuteo’s homeworkers were paid “slave labour wages”. It was a typical tabloid exaggeration – nobody was forced to take the work – but the recently established Low Pay Unit became involved and Subbuteo suddenly decided to do what bosses have done for centuries when faced with rising wages: mechanise. In 1967 probably the most loved and memorable of all the footballing figures was released, the Classic Heavyweight, which was more than likely designed by the sculptor Charles Stadden who was also responsible for other accessories in the Subbuteo range such as the World Cup trophy and various stadium figures. This highly detailed player was available until around 1980 increasing the range of teams to some 330 in total. Today, this is the most sought after figure type of all by collectors.

While the new figures started to fall from grace with a general public fascinated by the burgeoning video game market, they found approval among one Subbuteo sector: the competitive player. As with the real game, the 1982 World Cup belonged to the Italians, who craftily polished their players’ bases to whizz them around the pitch. In addition, you can find a team painted in almost any current or history team, and you can even buy your own unpainted teams to create fantasy sides! With an estimated 3.5 billion fans, football is the world’s most popular sport, transcending national, cultural, social, religious, and language barriers. I’m not a fan, but it’s a team that I’ve always followed with pleasure,” gurgled Gigi. “When I was little it was one of the teams I always played with in my Subbuteo. I liked it because it had beautiful colours and a name I couldn’t pronounce.” Word is that Buffon now owns 500 Subbuteo teams.Subbuteo captures some of the magic of the beautiful game, providing players of all ages with an engaging tabletop game and a creative modelling hobby.
