About this deal

Melcourt SylvaGrow® range is a sustainable growing medium for gardeners who are as passionate about the environment as their gardens. Ensure that the SylvaGrow with added John Innes is kept moist but not over-wet, at all times. Hanging baskets have a particularly high water requirement and may need watering every day in warm weather Here at KG Smith & Son, we’re proud to be a leading supplier of SylvaGrow ® with Added John Innes to nurseries, businesses and homes across the UK. Available for rapid delivery or for collection from our Northamptonshire base, it represents the gold standard in plant growth and is the perfect companion for successful gardening and vegetable growing.

Raised Beds SylvaGrow John Innes No.2 can be used as part of a raised bed medium for vegetable and strawberry growing. Simply mix one part SylvaGrow John Innes No.2 thoroughly with two to three parts loam or garden soil to gain a valuable addition of organic matter, sterilized loam and nutrients. Remember to supplementary feed as instructed above in ‘Potting On’ as vegetables are heavy feeders and will respond well. Coiror coconut fibre – this is a waste product, mainly imported from Sri Lanka. It has excellent water-holding abilities and a sufficient mix of fine and coarse fibres to hold air in its pore spaces, to provide good growing conditions. However it doesn’t hold nutrients well. The environmental credentials of coir are debatable, due to the distance it has to be transported, but this is balanced out by the fact that it is a genuine waste material. Suttons strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.SylvaGrow Organic can be used as part of a raised bed medium for vegetable and strawberry growing. Research is ongoing into a number of materials that, if locally available, may be useful ingredients in blended products, such asarable straw waste, wool waste, carpet waste, and paper and cardboard production waste. But what is it about this particular compost that has turned it into a market leader? Let’s start at the beginning. Who was John Innes?

Ensure that the SylvaGrow Organic is kept moist but not over-wet, at all times. Hanging baskets have a particularly high water requirement and may need watering every day in warm weather Remove the cover when the seeds have germinated and ensure the SylvaGrow Organic is kept evenly moist at all times Melcourt SylvaGrow® with added John Innes is a unique blend of fine bark, wood fibre (bi-products of sustainably managed British forests) and coir (from known, ethically-approved sources) plus sterilized loam and sand. It contains balanced nutrients sufficient for the first 4 – 6 weeks of growth. Removing peat from the ground is an unsustainable activity that can cause serious harm to the environment and damage biodiversity. For this reason, it is being phased out from horticultural use, with the sale of peat and peat-containing products in the retail horticultural sector being banned by 2024, although some uses for professional growers will still be permitted until 2030.

SylvaGrow with added John Innes is not suitable for raising lime-hating, ericaceous plants in containers. For these we recommend SylvaGrow Ericaceous. Cautions Ideal for potting established plants, trees, shrubs, climbers, fruit bushes, vines and plants which are to remain in the pot for a long time. Wood-based materials such as woodfibre, composted bark, sawdust, wood or paper waste are usually the main ingredient. Wood-based mixes can be tailored to the requirements of most plants, as they have excellent drainage properties, as well as a low pH. John Innes Composts were originally developed at the John Innes Horticultural Institute in the 1930s. The four formulae were designed to cater for the different nutritional needs of plants ranging from seed sowing through to final containers. The range comprised Seed Compost and then numbers 1, 2 & 3, containing successively higher nutrient levels. SylvaGrow® John Innes Seed Compost, No.1, No.2 and No.3 offer gardeners an exceptional opportunity to use these great heritage composts with an updated peat-free formulation.
