About this deal

The quarters prepared for a High Lord of Terra do not have reliable climate control or running water at this stage of the Palace's construction. Either that, or this is a consequence of the furtive nature of her investigation; she may have purposefully chose unassuming accommodations, or was given them as an insult. There were other places. Some of them, only the Emperor knew of. Some we were all familiar with. Some were close at hand, others very far away, all of them chosen according to the dimensions of the greater project. There was another location, one that I still cannot reveal to you with any precision, only that it was far from here. So far that, when the alarms began, we were a long way from where we needed to be. Valdor follows up with a more practical concern -- the unstable Thunder Warriors, if left to their own devices, threatened the stability they had helped build. The Primarch Project had been underway for some time, and significant resources have been devoted to its completion, but Valdor is still arguing against its primacy, if not for outright abandonment. What is left for you, Constantin?’ Ushotan breathed. ‘What more can He take from you that He hasn’t already?’ Now down to the actual book itself. Do not think this book will be filled with epic lore filled conversations between the big 3. Both the sigilite and the emperor make some tantalising yet all too brief appearances, their conversations with our man are very interesting but this book is about Valdor and his legion. My guess is that the author didn't want anything to over shadow our main protagonist, so this is very much a story of Valdor and an insight into his and the early custodians own role in the creation of the empire, and to that the book does it very well indeed. an injured Samonas is confronted by Valdor who won’t say the truth of what happened with the gene vault but simply that Samonas didn’t fail. He proposes that the Custodes begin war games (I.e. blood games) in the future to keep them on their toes.

The Custodes Samonas meets with Valdor and gets instructions to observe Kawandire and try to thwart her coming rebellion which they’re well aware of.

For the negatives, I for one, would have loved to know the real truth about what happened on Mt. Ararat. I also really wanted to know more about the method of creation of the Space Marines and would have really liked more information regarding the origins of the Primarchs and how they were scattered; and most of all I just wish this book had much longer length opposed to what is on offer.

It seems that this is the first time that Valdor encounters a force that he feels might threaten the Emperor and His goals. Nearing the end of the wars of Unity, Valdor’s courage and purpose is put to the test as never before. The petty warlords and tyrants of Old Earth have been all but vanquished, and the Emperor’s armies are triumphant. What now for the nascent Imperium and what fate its forgotten soldiers, its Thunder Warriors and armies of Unity? A new force is rising, one which shall eclipse all others and open the way to the stars. But change on Terra is seldom bloodless and for progress to be ensured darker deeds are necessary.
