With protection in the early 20th century, the beaver population has rebounded to an estimated 10 to 15 million, still much less than it was before the fur trade. This is an EDP and projects nicely (just over arm’s length) for the first few hours leaving a gorgeous scent trail. Don’t go crazy with the sprays. This is definitely a “less is more” type fragrance… 1–2 sprays MAX and you’re good to go. The scent of castoreum depends on the beaver diet. Bevears are vegans, they eat tree bark and tree shootings. European beavers prefer birch, aspen, willow, poplar, and some herbaceous plants, like water lilies, cattail, reed. It then calms down to create a gorgeous scent bubble around you and lasts an impressive 7–10 plus hours.

But, does it live up to its name? Castoreum used to be a common note in luxe fragrances, but now we smell it only in niche: Amouage Memoir, Beloved and Fate, Mona di Orio Cuir, Nishane Afrika Olifant, Mark Buxton Sexual Healing, Kinski, Serge Lutens Baptême du Feu, One of Those Sulphur [16S], Les Liquides Imaginaires Saltus.It is believed that a specific "smoked" aspect of castoreum could be obtained after drying it above the open fire or after "aging". For perfume purposes, alcoholic tinctures, resinoids and absolutes are prepared from sacs dried and crushed into small pieces. What surprised me at the very first test was that this fragrance - unlike what you would expect from Initio and its name - comes across as rather monothematic. For me Absolute Aphrodiasac remains a vanilla scent from beginning to end. The Bibergeil (which caused me some concern before) proves to be harmless and only adds a discreet animal note to the top note of the fragrance. Also the white flowers can be guessed at most. When it first opens it has a slight similarity to the fragrance Spicebomb by Viktor & Rolf (except Rehab is smoother, richer, and far superior smelling).

If you like that type of fragrance, then I think you are going to LOVE Rehab. That said, as Rehab dries down it takes its very own intoxicating direction…

Nowadays, vivid animalic perfumes are not as often, but castoreum is stil an important part of oud accords, you can smell it in Arabian style perfumery: Kilian Cruel Intensions, L’Artisan Parfumeur Al Oudh. The fragrances come in beautiful bottles that have a soft rubber-like texture coating, adhered with their logo on the front (the name of each fragrance is engraved on the top of the cap). The brand’s name and name of the scent are engraved on the top of the cap. You’re left with a smooth creamy and slightly powdery nutty almond vibe with a hint of vanilla sweetness and subtle floral undertones. Absolute Aphrodisiac is an EDP and projects just under arm’s length for the first 1–2 hours, then sits closer to the skin, lasting around 8–10 plus hours.
