The adidas ZG21 was easily one of my favorite spiked golf shoes when it was released in 2021. It was the shoe of choice for Collin Morikawa through his dominant performances in 2021 that included the Open Championship at Royal St George's. When the ZG23 was announced earlier this year, I was excited to try the new model for myself and, after two rounds of golf out in California, I was impressed with the developments adidas has made to one of its flagship golf shoes.

Two years in the making, the footwear giant is claiming that the ZG21 is up to 20 per cent lighter than the brand's previous spiked shoes and is also 'launching a new category of golf footwear'. Having worn a number of adidas shoes in the past the waterproof guarantee really is a guarantee. The ZG21s are well sealed and well made meaning your feet will be kept dry on even the wettest of days. On the flipside, breathability wasn't an issue either. Sporty look.That mild soreness wouldn't put me off wearing the ZG21 because it's par for the course (sorry!) with spiked shoes and I’d expect this mild discomfort to ease once the shoes are more broken in as wearing a brand new pair of spiked shoes for the first time often has this result. ZG21 doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue though does it, which is a shame given how stylish they are.

In recent years Adidas have produced some of the comfiest golf shoes in the market, and the ZG21 follows that trend. If comfort is your number one priority when buying golf shoes, the ZG21 will see you just right. There are number of elements in the shoe that went into achieving this. I simply can’t fault the performance. This shoe does everything it’s supposed to do. With some products (golf clubs especially) you read about all the tech and what it is supposed to achieve but you don’t really know if it’s a load of old nonsense or not as in many cases it’s impossible to tell. The ZG stands for Zero Gravity due to the feeling of weightlessness you have when you put them on. The shoe weighs only 13 ounces which is considerably lighter than most other spiked models and 20% lighter than anything else adidas have produced for golf. For example, if a new driver claims to have new ground breaking technology in the face that provides 5% more forgiveness, you almost have to just take the manufacturers word for it because, let’s face it, how could we possibly know for sure?

This is then coupled with boost cushioning (which we have loved at Golfalot in recent years - especially in the Adidas Tour360 Primeknit Shoes) and it gives players lightweight comfort and stability with every swing and step. I tested the shoes in the White/Grey/Lime Green colourway and to be honest didn't find them all too attractive to begin with, though I have to say they grew on me a little as testing went on. There's honestly nothing too fancy here to put golfers off.
