taste: fresh and spicy impact - nearly not warming, light vanilla, light and delicate sherry, some white pepper, very subtle sweet tobacco notes. Nose: Toffee, butter, and most noticeably, caramel coated almonds. I also detected a slight hint of orange once or twice, though it does not provide a consistent presence. Auchentoshan distillery ( / ˌ ɒ x ən ˈ t ɒ ʃ ən/ OKH-ən- TOSH-ən) is a single malt whisky distillery in the west of Scotland. [4] :15 Taste: Toffee and fudge again, berries of some sort and maybe raisins. Very full, rich and satisfying. The following indicators should be taken as only a guide and not a set of hard and fast rules. Some "premium" whiskeys really are quite terrible, while some mass market products are good enough to pour into a decanter and serve to the Duke of Edinburgh. A+: A masterpiece and one of the ten best whiskeys of its type. Above five stars. We may sell, license, transfer, assign or in any other way dispose of the Service (including Members) to any third party without any notification to you, e.g. (but without limitation) in connection with any reorganization, restructuring, merger or sale, or other transfer of assets. Nice aroma of malt, savory spices, fruit, butterscotch, overripe citrus and a general oily earthiness. It’s not super complex, but it has a nice weight to it that makes it come across as bold.

Nose: Poached pears and dusty spices – cinnamon (highly pronounced) and anise sit on top of a bed of wild honey and breakfast cereals. Later, unripe apples and fruit pastilles are joined by moist tobacco leaves and green grassiness. Quite fresh, quite clean and altogether rather pleasant. a b c d e f g h i j k l Maclean, Charles (2017). Spirit of Place: Whisky Distilleries of Scotland. London: Frances Lincoln. Sometimes referred to as “Glasgow’s malt whisky” because of the distillery’s proximity to that city, Auchentoshan is one of the six distilleries comprising the Lowland region. The sweet and delicate signature of the spirit coming off Auchentoshan’s stills has also led some to call it “the breakfast whisky,” and that particular flavor likely stems from one of the more idiosyncratic practices of the distillery: Auchentoshan is one of the few distilleries in Scotland employing triple distillation, by and large an Irish practice.

Auchentoshan 12 Years is the entry malt for the Auchentoshan distillery which is one of only 3 remaining Lowlands distilleries after the whisky market crash that caused a rash of distillery closures in 1983. Like many of the now defunct Lowlands distilleries, Auchentoshan practices a triple distillation which is a fairly common practice in Ireland, but much less so in Scotland where the majority of distilleries practice a 2x distillation. Nose: gentle. Light citrus, a bit of chocolate fudge, and...a touch of smoke? I swear I'm not crazy, it's there. Not exactly peat smoke, maybe more like faint cigar ash. Also some florals. Summer meadow. Not the most captivating nose ever, but still interesting. The distillery has a visitor centre and conference facilities, both completed in 2005, and is open to the public for tours every day of the week. Auchentoshan 12 Years is a single malt with a pleasant amount of character. It’s a whisky that I wouldn’t say I’ve been avoiding reviewing, but I haven’t exactly gone out of my way to secure a bottle so I was incredibly happy to see it show up in the Flaviar tasting kit I was sent – which is a neat thing in and of itself. At the same time I've been planning to send some whisky samples to my friend and fellow Connosr member, Systemdown, as he had the good idea that exchanging samples would be a good way to experience more whiskies for much cheaper.

Dark Oak

Finish: Quite long and satisfying, the toffee and fudge remain and I get a lingering feeling of warmth and all being right in the world. Finish: The licorice note detected on the palate carried through on the finish that I found to be of medium length and drying. It had a slightly harsh quality that detracted slightly from the experience. Nose is lemon citrous, honey, light fresh white oak, toasted almonds, some light spice, pepper and ginger. light barley. Also some crystallised stem ginger. [12] a b c "Auchentoshan Single Malt Scotch Whisky". TheWhiskyExchange.com. Archived from the original on 17 July 2011 . Retrieved 24 December 2008. For many years Auchentoshan billed itself as the only triple distilled single malt Scotch whisky. The distillation technique is commonly publicised, especially by Irish distillers, as a method which results in a narrower selection of cut spirit and an eventual lighter make – ergo a ‘smoother’ final whisky. But, Auchentoshan have been far from the only Scotch whisky to produce triple distilled spirit – Benrinnes and Springbank (via Hazelburn which was first introduced in 2005) have both used partial triple distillation, and latterly, Benriach, Benromach and Bruichladdich and have all produced small batch whiskies using the technique.
