Moving up to the Small Batch was a significant upgrade.This tasted close very close to Buffalo Trace. The fruit notes were on point, but there was a combination of grainy and cornbread notes that I found here and there that still showed its youth. Palate: The orange scent comes through on my tongue in the form of a concentrated orange oil. There’s also baking spices with cinnamon leading the way with a nice sweetness and oily texture on my tongue. The tannins have calmed down from the nose.

The fruit notes kind of disappear on the finish, which is disappointing, but sometimes I feel like I can still taste a bit of the apples from the palate. McAfee’s Benchmark Old No. 8 Bourbon is definitely my least favorite regular release from Buffalo Trace. My all-time least favorite BT release was the rice bourbon, but that was a special edition experiment and is among the worst whiskeys I’ve ever had. Mash Bill & Alcohol Content While it may not be exceptional, Benchmark proves to be a decent choice within its price range, as it avoids the unpleasant flavors often associated with budget liquors.In August of this year, Buffalo Trace quietly released a revamped lineup of their bottom-shelf staple, Benchmark Bourbon. For years, Benchmark wore no age statement and was watered down to a measly 80 proof. Finish: The fruit intensifies with some heat that was unrecognized on the palate.
