About this deal

Chasing Charlie by Kathy Carmichael is an ePublishing Works release. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Rian, are you worried about typecasting yourself? You did two Knives Out movies, which are whodunnits centered around Daniel Craig’s detective Benoit Blanc, and you are doing this show. But we also play with that going forward in the story. That’s the other thing that kind of is fun; to mess with what the audience has an expectation of. “Oh, it’s this world. So Charlie will be working there.” And, then, to have some other way in is fun to do.

Davis, an accomplished businessman, frequents the library to research cowboys and ranching. He's ready to allow someone else to manage the family business so that he can pursue his dream of becoming a cowboy. Also, Davis would love for his widowed mother to accept the marriage proposal from her long-time companion who will be leaving the country soon. He knows his mother will never agree to the proposal and leave the country until she sees that Davis is settled. Davis devises a plan to find a temporary fiance' to show his mother that he is settled so that she can pursue her happiness. When Davis spots Charlie in the red dress, he knows she will be perfect for his scheme. Charlie is a character who has, and does, suffer significant trauma. Natasha, how do you find ways to include levity in a story such as this? When their worlds collide, Charlie becomes Davis' beard, to convince his mom that he is fine, relationship wise, and she can marry the love of her life without concern for her sons well being. What starts out as a date arrangement turns into a love escapade. Easy said than done when it comes to matters of the heart, but a listen to the Chasing Charlie podcast will be enough for you to be extra cautious with your heart and your money, of that Robson is sure.

Johnson: That, to me, was something [I wanted] from the very start. And that’s part of the reason why I wanted it to be a road show; why I wanted to get Charlie on the road and living off the grid. I’d just made a movie, Glass Onion, which is in that very fancy world of rich people. And exploring the corners of America that aren’t generally on television seemed, to me, much more interesting. Charlie also spends the majority of her time in middle America and working lower-income jobs. That’s not something we usually see on TV. Why was that important to show? Carmichael protagonist is Charlotte Nelson a librarian in the researcher department of the town library. She is the youngest member of the Nelson Family, who are successful ranchers and are celebrities on the rodeo circuit. Charlotte striving to be on her own and not rely on her brother celebrity status or part of the Nelson ranch. Charlotte is against anything cowboy. The finale really wants you to remember that its title is called “The Hook.” You have someone watching the Robin Williams–Dustin Hoffman movie Hook and Bratt’s Cliff recites the Blues Traveler song “Hook.” Was that all in the script? Raised in a family of rodeo champions on a South Texas cattle ranch, Charlie wants only one thing: to avoid thrill-seeking cowboys.

It was anyone for him. If you came into his radar, he would scan you, he would interview you, he would work out a way to get money from you.” says Robson. Davis was a bit better, but he too had some choppiness to his storyline. It took a while to find out what his actual job was. Which to me made sense to tell because of his longing to own a ranch. He also turned from the forever bachelor into the marrying man overnight. It just wasn't believable. While Vivien found this strange at first (because who actually writes on their dating profile that they’re a millionaire and then complains about people being attracted to them for their money?), she was eventually swayed. Vivien herself describes what it was like to fall deeper and deeper into Charlie’s clutches, until she was totally alone. When Davis, a confirmed bachelor, realizes that the only reason his Mom is not marrying the love of her life because he would be left alone he knows he has to do something. Not actually get married, heaven forbid, but a fake fiancee might calm his Mom down so she would not worry about him any longer and finally accept her long time friends marriage proposal. Besides he wants to become a cowboy and buy a ranch. He had to take over his Dad's business when he died and has never enjoyed the work. Sam was a flawed but believable character. She loves her job and is really good at it but her salary slips through her fingers as soon as it's earned! She faces the embarrassment of her credit cards being declined and is often bailed out by her friends and family. She is behind on her rent and contribution to the bills and flatmate Mara is understandably starting to lose patience! She is a kind person though and I couldn't understand why she was so keen to get together again with the sleazy but very handsome Charlie. In her pursuit of him, she gets herself in all kinds of embarrassing situations and she isn't listening to her friends advice. At times I wanted to shake her and at times I wanted to take her aside and say 'now look....'. Even she begins to wonder who she is and what she really wants deep down.Johnson: We really try and shake it up with each one. Just in a vacuum, if you looked at the Ellen Barkin– Tim Meadows theater episode [“Exit Stage Death”], and the “Escape from Shit Mountain” episode, the notion that those both exist in the same series seems ridiculous. What I hope is that the episodic nature of it, and the fact that one of the other tools in our belt for surprising and thrilling the audience every week, is that within the confines of this structure, tone is another thing that we can take wild swings in different directions.
