About this deal

The Moon and the Sledgehammer ( Anthology Film Archives) — This lost gem from the early 1970s casts quite a hypnotizing spell as it profiles a truly eccentric English family living on an estate in the country. The Moon and the Sledgehammer is a lovely lesson in how to turn a potentially exploitative subject into something much more tender and poetic We are thrilled to have a distinguished selection of Scottish voices joining director Philip Trevelyan in conversation following the screening. Each one excels in their field and has shown that creativity, inventiveness and dedication can find solutions to many problems. Real change can only come if the will of the people is behind it, pushing politicians from the ground up. Using Art as inspiration, this rare opportunity to view a collection of films from around the world, curated for the festival, show different versions and visions of sustainability; some offering inventive solutions, ( Dance of Joy) some highlighting the high cost of progress, ( Bait, The Raven’s Dance, Slow Glass, The Lost Legacy of Bida Bikini). Others feature those who have found contentment and their place in life without falling into the consumer trap, ( Big Ware, Lambing, The Glory of the Garden). A dynamic combination of the old and the new – a 50 year old film screening in the most forward thinking sustainable venue

This event has now ended. You can watch a recording of the conversation on our YouTube channel. ——— A week-long online film event about our relationship with nature We’ve throttled our enjoyment of work by buying so many ‘convenient’ machines and different ways of not doing work,” says Trevelyan. “The more we stop doing things for ourselves, the more lifeless we become. There’s terrific life expressed by the family in that film – gaiety, innocence and openness.” We continue to work with cinemas and film festivals on the important Trevelyan Retrospective and hope conditions allow for this exciting event. The Retrospective will start with Trevelyan’s earliest film – his student film, Lambing, and continue with Ship Hotel – Tyne Main, a wonderful piece of observed cinema featuring the famous pub on the banks of the river Tyne on a Sunday afternoon as the publicans prepare to welcome the locals for a sing song and game of dominoes. Big Ware is a study of the last traditional country potter. The delight and high standard he takes in his craft as we observe his skills tells the story of how pottery, once common in every home, lost out to the competition from plastic, but when people returned to pottery he was the only potter left. The family business continues to this day. Trevelyan’s rarely seen film about the poet Basil Bunting And of course Trevelyan’s most famous film, The Moon and the Sledgehammer, will be featured, with guests accompanying Trevelyan on stage for Q&As. Big Ware, for the BBC’s prestigious artsprogramme Omnibus in 1971 who screened the film twice. It shows George Curtis at work;the last traditional country potter still working. This is a subject well understood by Trevelyan whose mother was the well-known craft potter Ursula Mommens. Philip Trevelyan is the director of The Moon and the Sledgehammer. Trevelyan’s film career spans 1964 to 1975 and includes Lambing, The Ship Hotel – Tyne Main, Big Ware, and Basil Bunting. A master of pace and poetic expression, his constant theme features people who have found true contentment in life. Critic John Russell Taylor of The Times recently called him ‘one of the few real poets of cinema’. Trevelyan took up organic farming in 1974, and now runs an organic miller co-operative, as well as designing award-winning ergonomic hand tools, specialising in chemical free weed control by the traditional but labour intensive practice of removing and permanently eradicating individual plants https://lazydogtools.co.uk Link to Guardian article: https://tinyurl.com/xx4c8mre A truly remarkable film that shows how much can be achieved with so little. Booth’s eye-opening documentary is about a centre in India which provides free prosthetic limbs for the many people, largely the poorest in society, who have lost one or both limbs. Hello. I hope this finds you safe and well during these strange times of both adversity and positive changes, where our values are being challenged like never before. One of the best-loved films to feature steam traction engines is now available for home viewing following the brand new release of the film The Moon and the Sledgehammer on DVD.She has exhibited, curated and held residencies around the world as well as being a respected and published spokeswoman for the visual arts where she has contributed to a broad range of initiatives in Scotland and has served as a board member on many arts organisations. On the third evening, The Moon & the Sledgehammer will screen Gorge Coeur Ventre (Still Life, 2016), by Maud Alpi, fresh from the Locarno film festival. More here Trevelyan’s other documentaries from the 1970s and early 1980s – about lambing, the life of an old pub, traditional pottery and classical musicians rehearsing – reflect his interests in people who, he says, often do practical work with their hands, unlike the rest of us who “are doing our best to do as little as possible, and ask machines to do it for us”.
