You are required to wear sub fusc for all your examinations; plus your academic student gown and mortar board/soft cap. Your college/department can advise you on the appropriate gown to wear (see above; Academic Gowns for Students) Mortar Board was the first national honor society for college senior women and continues to promote women's interests in higher education today. The organization coalesced by agreement of four local women's honor societies. Founding locals were: The All Steel Mortar Pan is 30" by 30" at the top and 16" by 16" at the bottom, with a depth of 8".

The cap, together with the gown and sometimes a hood, now form the customary uniform of a university graduate in many parts of the world, following a British model. The Society admitted men in 1975 as a ramification of Title IX, at which point a clause was added in the Purpose to include "to promote and advance the status of women." This was further revised the following year to read, "...to emphasize the advancement of the status of women" as well as "to promote equal opportunities among all people." [2] [3] Mortarboards are often seen in party supply shops in the United States in May and June, when they appear in the form of party decorations, on commemorative gifts such as teddy bears, and on congratulatory greeting cards.Goff, Philip (1999). For the device used by builders, see Hawk (plasterer's tool).

In all cases you are required to wear full academic dress to your degree ceremony. If not properly dressed you may be refused admission to the degree ceremony and graduated in absentia. For most ceremonies, you will be required to change your academic gown and/or hood during the ceremony. When undertaking large areas of repointing the work area should be limited to the safe height that can be reached using a pointing trowel and a hawk (a hand-held mortar board) or any other pointing tool. Once the joints are filled these can then be returned to later, but before the mortar has dried (set) too hard, for finishing the pointing with either the trowel or a jointing tool. This still applies for deliveries out of our local area but please note that we use independent carriers so be aware that there may be external factors which we cannot control (e.g Far out postcodes or local traffic situations) Materials delivered direct from the manufacturer. Due to this influence, both teachers and students ended up wearing clerical clothing. This clothing choice helped teachers and students stay warm. The majority of lectures took part in large, cold stone buildings where the only source of heat was one of the many fires. Wearing robes allowed them to “layer up” underneath without looking out of place. Made from tubular steel, this lightweight and easy to handle product can be used either on scaffolding or on the ground.

Well, originally during graduation (particularly in the United States) the mortarboard had to be worn at all times during the ceremony. Only during prayer may it be removed. This changed in 1912, though. In celebration of their new enlistment as captains, the graduating class of midshipmen from the United States Naval Academy threw their midshipmen caps in the air as they received the ones equivalent to their new rank. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, as colour photography started to make an introduction into society, universities slowly implemented mortarboards having coloured tassels on top of them. These tassels often showed off the school colours or, later, the course the student had been part of. A further extension was to "table where council is held" (1570s), from whence the word was transferred to "leadership council, persons having the management of some public or private concern" (1610s), as in board of directors (1712). "Bow to the board," said Bumble. Oliver brushed away two or three tears that were lingering in his eyes; and seeing no board but the table, fortunately bowed to that.NB: If you are not sure what size you need (e.g. you land on the boundary), we would recommend going for the larger size, allowing a more comfortable fit. Worn by those taking postgraduate taught, or postgraduate research degrees (e.g. MSc, MPhil, DPhil etc.) Like most types of headgear, academic caps typically are not worn by men indoors in the Commonwealth, except for by Chancellors and high officials. In the event the wearer moves indoors, the hat is carried. In some ceremonies, caps are no longer worn by men, and are only worn by women, for whom wearing the cap indoors is acceptable. Some graduation ceremonies have completely abandoned the cap, leading to a popular urban legend in the UK and Ireland that not wearing the cap began as a protest against the admission of female members to universities. In addition, students traditionally wear carnations for examinations (though this is not compulsory): Please note that given the current circumstances alot of carrier companies are struggling to keep up with demand and although we do book these deliveries as next day services, the carriers cannot always fulfil these and an extra day may be required.
