About this deal

As with any other staining concrete project, surface preparation is critical. Any stains, such as rust, will show through in the finished project. Clean the entire surface with a heavy-duty cleaner (Photo 2), working in 4 x 4-ft. sections at a time. Then rinse the concrete with water until you don’t see any more soapy bubbles. For tough rust stains, use a stain remover, and rinse it off with water. For grease or oil stains, use a product that’s designed to remove those stains. Blast dirt and debris out of the kerfs with water. Prep the area for staining Paving stones and slabs are exposed to continuous weathering, and they may be subject to severe mechanical stress. Therefore, they might also need maintenance treatment almost every year. At the earliest after 1 month from the treatment a dirty surface can be cleaned with Tikkurila Huoltopesu Maintenance Cleaner (1 part of Huoltopesu to 10 parts of water). Rinse the surfaces and allow to dry. The chemical cement stain removers sold by builders' merchants contain an acid that reacts with the cementitious material, breaking it down and enabling total removal by repeated chemical treatment and scrubbing with a wire brush. Consequently, exceptional care is required.

Another other option as per the blog would be Coo-Var Anti-Slip Acrylic Floor Paint. However this wouldn’t be suitable for vehicle traffic. Work in small sections (4 x 6 ft. or so), starting near the house and working outward. Plan the application so you don’t box yourself into a corner. Pre-wet the whole of the pavement with clean water. Before the surface dries, spray with the prepared cleaning fluid (or brush with the fluid) and use a stiff brush to gently scrub the whole surface. If you’re creating a pattern, you’ll need shields to place in the kerfs or expansion joints to prevent spraying onto adjoining areas. We used fluorescent light lenses (available at home centers), but you could use cardboard. Have four or five on hand. Don’t use them if they’re dripping wet with stain or they’ll drip onto (and stain) the concrete. Summer: This is most likely the time you will be on the patio, so make sure to clean up any spillages or mess as they happen to minimise any long-term staining.

Routine brushing will keep patio surfaces free from leaves and debris, but removing stubborn stains on dirty patios will require the help of a patio cleaner. You can use either a pressure washer or patio cleaning product; however, be mindful that pressure washers can easily damage patio grout. The product is translucent and therefore unsuitable to change colour of previously industrially dyed paving stone or slab. Stones or slabs of different age might turn out differently in terms of colour. Impurities like motor oil, crystallization of salts or other impurities have an effect on the final colour. FAQ’s My patio slabs are sealed…can I paint over them? Lemon Juice - genuine lemon juice, fresh from a lemon, not from a bottle or a plastic imitation lemon. Squeeze directly onto the stained area, allow it to react for 5 minutes or so but don't allow it to dry out. While still wet, scrub the stained area with a nylon/polypropylene bristled brush (an old toothbrush is ideal), working the lemon juice into the surface of the paving. Wash off with plenty of clean water after 5 minutes and repeat as necessary.

Following dilution application can be either with a low-pressure pneumatic sprayer (course spray) or by using a watering can with a rose attachment This should only be undertaken on minor stains or if the efforts of the mechanical cleaning described above have left an undesirable or unsightly stain. When choosing the best patio cleaner, it’s advisable to look for an option that isn’t unnecessarily abrasive. There are plenty of eco friendly/organic options out there which don’t contain bleach. Also, look for a pet friendly patio cleaner if you have either pets or children around the house. Overall, there’s no need to use chemicals that are harsher than necessary to get the job done! After each and every treatment, wash down with clean water and allow to dry before inspect and assessing the results. Repeat if necessary, but no more than is absolutely essential. If the stain is proving impossible to shift, consider replacing the contaminated area of paving. For cleaning oil from plain, trowelled concrete: Budget: Fortunately, most patio cleaner solutions are reasonably budget-friendly, but they are single-use and won't work instantly. If you have the budget, investing in a pressure washer or wire brush tool could save you money in the long run. Plus, a pressure washer can be used on all sorts, not just the patio, making it a versatile and eco-friendly option. If your patio doesn’t have an intact/active DPM (damp-proof membrane) in situ under the patio surface, or has poor drainage, then choosing a paint rather than a patio sealer or stain will likely result in a reduced life expectancy. Yes you can, painting your patio slabs is similar to painting floors inside the house, we recommend using a roller to make the process as straightforward as possible. It's important that you clean the area before you start painting, so make sure you sweep it and hose it down. We also advise that you choose a good weather day to paint your patio slabs. For more information on how to paint your patio slabs and paving slabs, feel free to get in touch with the Promain technical team today, they can always be on hand to assist with your needs and requirements. Type of dirt: There are three main types of dirt that need ousting; algae, moss, and dirt. For dirt or oil, consider a more powerful patio cleaner solution. Moss can be removed using a moss killer, whilst algae requires an algae remover. Most patio cleaner solutions will identify what they're best for cleaning, but for those more embedded areas of lichen and dirt, you'll likely need to use extra elbow grease.
