These roses have great variation in size, growth, and flowering performance and generally only bloom once during a growing season. Treat each plant as an investment of time, love, resources, and labour. Write down the care instructions, the pruning times, the garden placement. Identify your plants, get to know them well, care for them properly. Specialized pruning practices may be applied to certain plants, such as roses, fruit trees, and grapevines. It is important when pruning that the tree's limbs are kept intact, as this is what helps the tree stay upright. [2] Different pruning techniques may be deployed on herbaceous plants than those used on perennial woody plants. Hedges, by design, are usually (but not exclusively) maintained by hedge trimming, rather than by pruning. Plant tender jasmines (such as J. polyanthum) in containers and keep indoors in a warm, bright spot. A conservatory is ideal. You can also move them outside in summer, to a warm, sheltered spot, but bring them indoors before night temperatures fall below 13–15˚C (55–59˚F)
Because of this, and because these plants generally have a freer and more naturalized look about them, they require less maintenance pruning. Again, before you plant, prepare as above for other rose plantings. Major scaffold branches of shade trees should be vertically spaced at least 8 inches apart and preferably 20 to 24 inches apart. Closely spaced scaffolds have fewer lateral branches resulting in long, thin branches with poor structural strength. The timing of pruning can also affect flowering. Some plants produce flower buds on current season’s growth, while others bloom in the spring from buds formed the previous year. If you want to maximize the flower show, prune spring flowering trees and shrubs shortly after they finish flowering. On the other hand, plants that bloom in the summer should be pruned before growth begins in the spring, because these plants develop their flower buds on the current season’s growth. If pruning tree fruits or berry crops, be sure to follow production recommendations for those crops so that you don’t inadvertently reduce your yields. I consider each plant we add to our garden as an investment and like any investment I want the care manual. Since they’re vines, clematis plants require some kind of support to guide their growth. The type of support system is usually dependent on the variety grown. For instance, poles are acceptable choices for smaller growing clematis vines, which can range anywhere from 2 to 5 feet (0.6-1.5 m) in height.
These shrubs sometimes will produce what I call an independent shoot that just zooms out from the base. You may be able to train them in to your plan and basic framework, but if it’s not possible, just cut them out at the base to avoid the branches from becoming congested and not having the balance you want. This initial hard pruning will root out any damaged shoots and will encourage vigorous growth in the spring. Inexperienced gardeners often fear “hurting” their new precious rose, but if they don’t give it that hard initial pruning, they will have a weaker plant in the spring. The final main category of roses are those climbers and ramblers that have very different characters. Some grow large enough to be virtual trees, some bloom only once, others produce prodigious displays of flowers the entire summer.
Pruning Shrubs
I would recommend the F elco F-2 for the best quality and for a set that should last for a life time. They’re Swiss made and great for rose bushes, flowering bushes, and plants. You can read our review of the Felco F-2 here. Hedges are often shaped with flat tops and vertical sides; however, this unnatural shape is seldom successful. As far as the plant is concerned, the best shape is a natural form, with a rounded or slightly pointed top and with sides slanting to a wide base (Figure 10). Clean and oil tools regularly, including wiping an oily cloth on blades and other metal surfaces. Keep cutting edges sharp; several passes with a good oil stone will usually suffice. Paint, varnish or regularly treat wooden handles with linseed oil. Use tools properly. Don’t twist or strain pruners or loppers. Reasons to prune plants include deadwood removal, shaping (by controlling or redirecting growth), improving or sustaining health, reducing risk from falling branches, preparing nursery specimens for transplanting, and both harvesting and increasing the yield or quality of flowers and fruits. For greater strength, branches selected for permanent scaffolds must have a wide angle of attachment to the trunk. Branch angles less than 30 degrees from the main trunk result in a very high percentage of breakage, while those between 60 and 70 degrees have a very low breakage rate. Pruning clematis vines that flower in summer or fall should be done in early spring, as these flowers are produced on the current year’s growth. Pruning is an essential gardening skill.
