The strength of the story is founded in Cavanagh’s ability to cobble together a powerful narrative, as is usually the case. He uses this as a means of leading the reader along a path that keeps the momentum going and provides a collection of stunning revelations along the way. Great characters, whose presence make for a more entertaining read, return and provide some lighter banter at times, as the subject matter is quite intense. Plot twists and reveals help the reader remain on the edge of their seat and leave little room for mass predictability. I have always enjoyed when Steve Cavanagh writes and will eagerly await his next book, which I hope is in the works now! I went into this expecting a pulse pounding thriller. It’s more of a slow burn suspense story. While I was fine with it, other readers may have to adjust expectations. The ending, though enjoyable and well plotted, felt a bit anticlimactic. Again, for some reason, I wasn’t bothered by that...maybe because the execution from start to finish was really strong. I guess it was the right read at the right time. Of course every one assumes there is more to their situation. It can't be completely platonic can it?

Other characters that Kanon effectively develops include Fritz Gruber, who was Max’s partner in hunting Nazis. Goldfarb, a sewing machine factory owner in Buenos Aires who assisted Aaron and the Mossad. Dr. Markus Bildner, a Nazi who had been in charge of Schramms sterilization experiments under Mengele and assisted Schramm in his desire to leave Argentina. Jamie Campbell a CIA operative in Buenos Aires assists Aaron at first in his quest for justice. But once higherups in Washington have other ideas for Schramm it becomes a battle to keep the Nazi doctor away from the CIA as well as the Israelis who want to kill him. Aaron goal is to send him to Germany for trial which becomes very difficult once governments become involved. The most important character is Hannah Crane who turns out to be Schramm’s daughter. The give and take between her and Aaron is fascinating as they do the love dance, or perhaps she is just a means to getting her father. Their relationship has a touch of realism as Aaron begins to fall for her, but the memory of his promise to Max clouds his judgement.Told in two timelines, the past when the two first met in college and present, when trying to piece together this latest murder. I'm not sure what I think about this novel. I may be way too familiar with the subject matter to thoroughly enjoy it, as none of it surprised or was a revelation to me in any way. As an Israeli, I've heard about Eichmann's trial and Nazi hunters again and again, and was familiar with the moral discussions around the issue. Still, I'm happy that other readers would become more knowledgable on the subject through this novel. There’s no one in crime fiction more inventive than Lisa Lutz, and The Accomplice is her greatest sleight of hand yet. Wry and menacing, with the gravity-defying grace of a skipped stone, The Accomplice is at once a suspenseful thrill ride, a deep and disquieting meditation on friendship, and a Wes Anderson comedy rolled into one. After this, I’d read her grocery list.” —Amy Gentry, bestselling author of Good as Gone and Bad Habits

I was so looking forward to this book after reading and loving The Passenger by author Lisa Lutz years ago, and I’m glad to say it was really enjoyable. The writing is atmospheric, and I loved the technique of switching between two timelines (college years and 2019). I found the story gripping, and couldn’t wait to see how everything tied together. Owen Mann and Luna Grey met under some unexpected circumstances. Both college students, they were hunkering down in the library. Owen, handsome and a smooth talker, tried to engage Luna. She wasn't buyin' what he was sellin'. But all of a sudden, Luna collapses to the floor in an epileptic seizure. Owen never left her side.....ever. This was a genuinely incredible way to tell this tale, as the third person made me feel like I only had an outside perspective, I wasn’t supposed to be in Owen or Luna’s shoes. At the crux of it, Owen is just a hoe and Luna is weighed down by insurmountable guilty over giving her serial killer half bro an alibi that lead to more deaths (not a spoiler).Daniel Miller murdered fourteen people before he vanished. His wife, Carrie, now faces trial as his accomplice. The FBI, the District Attorney, the media and everyone in America believe she knew and helped cover up her husband's crimes. What I didn’t like: it seemed a bit long. oh and did I mention my eyes hurt?! In all honesty though it may have seemed long because I couldn’t put it down! As reference was to have a nice day out but still basically in Jammie’s and this took precedence over everything else! Owen is charming, outgoing, and rather humorous, while Luna is secretive, particular, and cautious. Despite their differences, their chance meeting created a bond that will seemingly last forever. Thank you to Ballantine Books and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Expected Publication Date: 1/25/22.

If you are interested in reading about Nazi doctors, I highly recommend Doctors from Hell: The Horrific Account of Nazi Experiments on Humans. It is not very long, has pictures, and is written by a journalist, so it is not a very tedious nonfiction read.Overall, this is a terrific and fascinating character driven study and the very definition of a psychological thriller in my opinion. Joseph Kanon is the author of The Good German which was made into a movie starring George Clooney and Cate Blanchett.
