About this deal

One mark deducted for claiming the demo of Pink Floyd’s Money was created in David Gilmour’s garden shed – I don’t think Roger Waters would be too pleased to read that, given the shed in question resided at the bottom of his garden at 187 New North Road, Islington! Everybody who had even the most glancing acquaintance with them and their deeds during this time has their anecdotes, small chapters in the greater creation myth with which they understandably do not wish to tamper. Memoirs have been written, often many decades after the events, which do not always square with other memoirs. In each case there is a tendency to place the author at the centre of the most momentous events, a tendency which is entirely understandable. In other cases entire episodes have been recalled which others who were there do not remember at all. Everyone has their anecdote, the culmination of which is the blob of solder they applied, the edit they made, the suggestion they put forward which played some part in nudging in this direction or that a piece of music with which we are all familiar, deep in our bones.

It may have begun life as an affluent suburban house, but it soon became a creative hub renowned around the world as a place where great music, ground-breaking sounds and unforgettable tunes were forged - nothing less than a witness to, and a key participant in, the history of popular music itself. A couple of days later I went to see Mark Lewisohn – the man who is to the Beatles what Robert Caro is to Lyndon Johnson – previewing his two-hour presentation about Abbey Road. Emerging afterwards the members of this select audience, which included Richard Williams, Mark Ellen and others who have spent inordinate amounts of time thinking about the Beatles, could be heard muttering “I never knew that” to each other. The following day a friend went to photograph the house which was formerly the home of the real “Mean Mr Mustard”. There’s always something you didn’t know about the Beatles. And looking at the history of Abbey Road – the history of recorded performance – it wasn’t just the public who started out confused. Early attempts at this new-found technique provoked bafflement, sometimes downright hostility, from performers, too. Emma Calvé, the great French soprano, was horrified on arrival at her first recording studio in 1902, refusing to alight from her carriage and four because the place looked more like a thieves’ den than a venue for an artiste of her standing. Only 100 guineas could change her mind. Once inside, she had to be ‘discouraged from breaking into dancing while singing as she did on stage’.

And – as David Hepworth himself snuffles – a vignette featuring the cold virus: John Lennon’s rendition of Twist And Shout on Please Please Me – which sounds (as David wonderfully describes it) ‘like it was the last he would ever sing’ – achieved thanks to Lennon having flu. In the early 1930s, English composer Edward Elgar conducted the historic recording sessions at EMI Studios for "Pomp and Circumstance," the series of five marches that would immortalize his name — the march entitled "The Land of Hope and Glory" emerged as a British sporting anthem, while "The Light of Life" became the signature melody for American graduation ceremonies.
