About this deal

Before the Scottish independence referendum, Mina said that she thought it was strange for artists to exhibit such a firm notion of national identity as many did in their support for the “yes” campaign, given their outsider status.

Do you hate a husband who has left you? Especially when the next one (your wife replacement)is already pregnant. And she was your current "best" hometown "Mom" friend on top of it! I do not believe in spirit possession but you know what, if someone were to tell me that in the middle of writing this book, the author, for whatever reason, got possessed by some otherworldly entity and wrote the rest of the book, I would have totally consider that possibility. Because that would have at least explained how a book that has started so well and completely unputdownable for the entire first half has managed to missed every opportunity to deliver even a tiny bit of satisfying conclusion/reveal. So many things were just so laughable and at certain point it ceased to be funny. *sigh*

Book Summary

Then an unexpected visitor arrives on her front stoop, a meddling neighbor intervenes, and life as Anna knows it is well and truly over. The devils of her past are awakened -- and they're in hot pursuit. Convinced she has no other options, Anna goes on the run, and in pursuit of the truth, with a washed-up musician at her side and the podcast as her guide. Conviction stars a strong female protagonist who is obsessed by true crime podcasts and decides, one day, to investigate one of the unsolved crimes herself.

To date, the entirety of Mina's work in comics has been published under DC Comics' Vertigo imprint: I found the international aspect of the book painfully cliche and kitschy. The chase around Europe felt like it came out of an amateur tourist’s fantasy. It was like the author thought adding accents and generic signs of wealth could compensate for bad writing splaying out in far too many directions to create any cohesive whole.Denise Mina brilliantly manages to be funny, heart-wrenching, gut-punching and addictive all at once: a fabulous, captivating novel" -- Nicci French Denise Mina [ permanent dead link] talking with Ian Rankin at the Edinburgh International Book Festival (transcript and audio), 17 August 2006 Darkly comic with an intricate plot, it’s a thrilling adventure with a really rather fabulous heroine Deirdre O'Brien, Sunday Mirror Misusing her grant she stayed at home and wrote a novel, 'Garnethill' when she was supposed to be studying instead. Soon Anna takes off on a journey trying to uncover mystery of the “Death and the Dana.” Fin Cohen, her former best friend’s jilted ex-husband, goes along for the ride. What transpires between the two is quite humorous. Fin is a complete hoot and is a character you will be sure to love.

Anna decided at that point to confront Gretchen. She and Fin traveled to Paris and arranged a meeting. Inside Gretchen’s home, Anna correctly accused Gretchen of planning the murders of Leon and his family when she learned that Leon was broke. Anna had also deducted that Violetta had survived the sinking of the Dana and had taken the identity of Gretchen’s personal secretary, Dauphine. Anna accused Violetta of having murdered her mother, and of having plans to murder Gretchen so that she could inherit her fortune. At this point, Gretchen called forward an assassin to kill Anna. The Long Drop is a fascinating, quietly insidious work, unsettling but absorbing Marcel Berlins, The Times
