About this deal

Broken-hearted, she wasn't doing well in school and decided to embark on this trip to prove herself. Ridiculed by the editor and his "chauvinist colleagues"at a popular motorcycle magazine in London, she was only all that more determined to achieve her goal. There were times when I certainly felt a little bit uncomfortable. Muslim countries were very difficult to travel through. Every country has its own difficulties though. India I didn’t like, but I never felt particularly threatened there. It was just constant staring of all the men and they would very rarely touch me. I just felt that sometimes the Muslim countries were a bit more aggressive and I never felt comfortable. a b c "Encounter Extract: Elspeth Beard". Overland Magazine. Take nothing away from her though. By this point, she has been on the road for two years. She has witnessed a lot, she has experienced a lot, and it is quite remarkable that she comes home in one piece (the bike somewhat less so).

But when I was on my bike with my helmet, everybody assumed I was male anyway. It didn’t occur to anybody that I was a woman, especially in those days.

And so it continued for two days and three nights, a simple routine of lazing around, sleeping and watching television, eating rice, meat and vegetables, while my body healed itself. At times I wondered if it might be marginally less painful to ride my bike to somewhere with a comfortable bed but I enjoyed being part of a family again. Watching them go about their daily routine not only gave me an insight into the life of a typical Thai family, but also made me realize how much I missed being in the bosom of my own clan. Since the publication of my book in 2017 I had many requests to publish more photographs from my journey. 'Lone Rider THE PHOTOGRAPHS' includes 450 images, most of them in colour. The book starts with my early childhood, then moves on to my first motorcycle adventurers before the round the world trip itself. The final sections cover the aftermath, including the conversion of Munstead Water Tower into my home, rebuilding my faithful R60/6 and the gear and equipment I used in the early 1980's. The last section of this book covers my hectic life since the publication of my story and how the journey has changed my life all over again. In addition to this, she leaned heavily on him when crossing the non-English speaking parts of the Earth and found precious few good words about him. She goes over the top describing how angry and short tempered he was but them describes him as a man who wanted to continue traveling the world indefinitely. I find it hard to believe that a man who has such a short fuse and violent temper would want to spend the rest of his days traveling the world on a motorcycle. The author of Lone Rider, Elspeth Beard, is an avid motorcyclist and award-winning architect living in a converted water tower in southeast England. To this day, she still rides her trusty BMW R 60/6. It is romantic, factual and says a lot for the true British spirit and oblivious nature to overcome any task or hardship to achieve your goals. As Madras emerged through the mist, it was exactly as she anticipated it would be, crumbling, chaotic, colourful and yet charming. Riding in this country would be a challenge and she had to reach Nepal so she could meet up with her parents for the first time in a long time, so had made the decision to take the train from Madras to Calcutta. It was a wise decision as it saved her at least two days travelling. Heading north from Calcutta, she realised how challenging it would be on the roads just to stay alive. Every time she stopped, especially in what seemed to be an empty part of the country, she was immediately surrounded by Indian men wanting to touch the bike. It was hard going, but she made it into Nepal. Mark arrived and they decided to take one of the organised treks up into the mountains. The wall next to the front door is decorated with various architectural awards, and as I entered the building I could see that they were clearly deserved. There’s no lift in her seven story tower, and so after walking up four flights of stairs and running out of puff Elspeth showed me into the kitchen where she put the kettle on and we sat down. Surrounding us were mementos of her time on the road. A cup of tea with Elspeth Beard
