Whilst enjoying the storyline I didn’t really connect with Jane. To me she was just a bit too self absorbed and passive, relying on others rather than making assertive choices, though she did evolve towards the end. I loved some of the other characters who were well written and believable - especially Monica the hopelessly unprofessional therapist and Kelly a single mother who takes Jane under her wing. There are some truly chaotic and humorous family scenes and an overall warmth running through the book, with a large cast of quirky characters and a dose of community action to boot. Maybe. I haven’t gigged for so long, it’s hard to gauge the standup circuit. This behaviour hasn’t suddenly increased, it’s always been there. It’s just being called out now, and that’s great. I used to romanticise the life of a writer – banging away at a typewriter, fuelled by cigarettes, coffee and booze I’m currently filming a new HBO and Sky series called The Baby. I can’t say much but Michelle de Swarte is the lead, the script is fantastic and I’m really enjoying it. With the court approving the adoption, they learn the identity of the flat's new owner. Jane’s struggles with conception, anxiety and undiagnosed OCD are immaculately written and Jane is Trying covers the ‘not knowing’ and ‘trying to figure it out’ aspect of life really well. That’s a tribute to my friend who once genuinely convinced me that it was pronounced “The Ma-goose”. Jason resigns himself to Tyler being separated from his sister, so decides to give the kids a wonderful time whilst they are both still together, but his father Vic refuses to give up without a fight. Noah from the council decides to let Tyler stay, but warns the couple that in 3 months they will need to go before a family court and convince the judge too. Hearing Freddy confess to an affair, blaming the stress of family life, makes Jason doubt whether he wants to go through with adoption and take on something that will affect every aspect of the rest of his life. Sensing his cold feet, Nikki is upset when she learns he only agreed to adoption in an effort to make her happy. My friend Anne gave me the first one as a gift; I thought it was quite cool in a kitsch way. I wanted Jane to be reading a celebrity memoir and tried loads of options – Lulu and Gary Barlow came close – but kept returning to Sharon’s. Then I read her latest memoir and found out she quite liked Trump when she was on The Celebrity Apprentice, but it was too late. Bennett, Steve. There was so much good stuff in this book that I don't want to rate it as merely an OK read, and I don't think I just mean that it is set in Foley, a fictionalised version of the town where Isy Suttie grew up and where I live and involves a fictionalised version of a much loved bookshop...the bathtub is absolutely real! There is also a real GP of the same name but not the same gender (or, ahem, talent)This is not my usual read but I was intrigued by the blurb on this one. It spoke to me as I’m sure it will others— many of us know the reality of these types of ‘trying’. Trying for a baby is a huge one, but also trying to hold it together, trying to overcome trauma, trying to understand and manage our own minds. White, Peter (8 May 2019). Wait until we’ve spent all our money on Botox and really need the fee. Jane is Trying is charming, funny and down-to-earth story about starting over when the past just won't leave you alone. It definitely strikes a chord with any woman who feels like they've grown up but never grown.

There is some intricate commentary at play around mental health and agency, and I liked how Jane’s growth directly explored this. During a camping weekend, Nikki fears she hasn't been able to connect with Princess and Tyler who seem to be bonding more with Jason.
