Despite the fluctuating quality of the songs, Stormwatchremains quite an interesting album for fans of the band. Not only does it present a darker, more serious side of Anderson’s persona, but it also contains a rather larger amount of compelling, if not incredibly innovative, music. One, however, can’t help feeling that of Jethro Tull’s folk trilogy, Stormwatchis obviously the weakest link. ( Sputnik Music) The news that a 40th Anniversary Edition of Stormwatch (The Force 10 Deluxe Edition, no less) is on its way reminded me that I hadn’t done a Tull album in quite a while and still had plenty of holes to fill in the Tull narrative. I guess you could see that as a straight line thematic progression through all three (?) For me, the song-writing here falls into the good category, and thus so does the album. another good song by the group in the same vein of the previous one. However, it's a song more dark and

Ian’s final message to the smug and comfortable attempts to remind them that the same fate awaits them unless they open minds and hearts to the fundamental truth that we are all human and our survival is dependent on mutual assistance: released as singles, such as 'Stitch in Time' or B sides such as the medieval inspired instrumental Given some of Ian Anderson’s remarks when interviewed in the post Stormwatch era, it’s clear that he was deliberately trying to simplify the Tull sound on this album; to bring in a little more directness, to dump some of the “musically complicated” aspects and maybe try to connect with the post-punk audience. Interestingly, when left to themselves the rest of the band made King Henry’s Madrigal, which doesn’t do any of those things.

as the sophisticated romanticism of 'Flying Dutchman'. My essential complaint is that I, as a JT follower, After a good start with “North Sea Oil”, although in principle only a derivative of songs already heard on their two previous albums, and the slightly ponderous yet catchy “Orion”, the album’s contour fades and it drifts on with rather empty events, struggling to constitute a weak appendix to _Songs from the Wood_ and _Heavy Horses_.
