About this deal

Another Fallonesque treat. Full of heart, humour and humanity. She's so good at tapping into the best and the worst in us. Fabulous RUTH JONES A reality TV show is a possibility, and what could be better than contrasting Kate and A.J? Sprinkled throughout are thoughts on God, losing your faith and finding it again. Her snappy, clever fiction . . . seems to slip down like a glass of nicely chilled white wine. Just Got Real makes no exception' SUNDAY TELEGRAPH Just going to put it out there straight away that I didn't really like this book much. I have read a previous novel from this author and quite enjoyed it, but I wasn't a fan of this one. I found it a bit hard to swallow that Joni was on her high horse about Ant lying when she herself had used pictures of her sister on her online profile, then followed (stalked...) Ant to force a meeting in person, at which point she used a fake name and had to change her phone number so Ant didn't put two and two together. I mean... really? Ant was 100% not a good person, but Joni wasn't exactly honest herself. I kept reading because I was mildly interested to see how it would all turn out, but I can't honestly say I enjoyed it. There were some parts I appreciated, like when Joni forms a connection with the other women that Ant is seeing.

Jane just keeps getting better and better. Her books are so smart, funny and warm. I really love her relatable characters, who appear fragile until they become warriors we cheer for * ADELE PARKS * Your writing makes the world a brighter place, [Jane Fallon]. Just Got Real is an absolute joy." - Joanna Cannon Life Just Got Real focuses on two teen girls who are very different from one another. While the wealthy and cultured Katie is used to public scrutiny, AJ is new to any attention outside of her family. When both girls are approached to be the stars of a new reality series, however, neither is too thrilled with the idea. Gripping, sharp and brilliantly twisty. Deliciously readable. A rollercoaster of revenge’ DAILY MAIL

I whipped through Just Got Real by Jane Fallon in a single sunlounger session and howled with laughter . . . A tautly plotted story of betrayal and revenge, it's threaded with authentic characters and heartwarming friendship Clare Macintosh, Good Housekeeping With all that being said, as I viewed an ARC, I'm not sure what has changed between what I have read and the synopsis that is posted as of the date of my review. It discusses Kate's brother Val (not his name in the version I read), and the two of them going to summer camp together. Again, that did not happen in the version I read. Would be interested to read what type of camp both of them would attend together. But when they meet in real life, they fall for each other. Soon they are a happy, steady item. Until Joni discovers Ant is still on the app, still dating other women . . . The plot is fresh, fun and timely with so many people turning to online dating apps and watching programmes like The Tinder Swindler on Netflix. Whilst this is a story of three women trying to get revenge on a man who’s been playing them all, it’s also so much deeper than that. I thought it was also such a gorgeous look at loneliness and making friends as an adult, which can feel so daunting. As much as I loved watching them make Ant squirm, I REALLY loved the moments where the women were all together and just having the best time as friends - and I definitely had some warm fuzzies going on by the end!

I've read - and loved - ALL of Jane Fallon's books, but Just Got Real is her best yet! The plotting is as ingenious and entertaining as ever but this book has a lot of WARMTH and HEART. It's especially gorgeous on female friendship * MARIAN KEYES * Full of charm, excitement and the humour splashed throughout adds this certain charisma that makes it so relatable. Your writing makes the world a brighter place, [Jane Fallon]. Just Got Real is an absolute joy * JOANNA CANNON *

Hobbies

While reading this book, I felt as if I was reading a bit of story of Sadie's life in reading about A.J. A.J is girl from Louisiana who just moved to Tennessee with her mother and brother for a new start as her father recently passed a couple of years ago. A.J will be starting her Junior year of high school at a prep school. This is where she meets the other main character Kate Kelly, Kate is a nice girl, but she is a material girl. She is Junior class president, a girl who is in charge of everything, but at the same time, she lives in a world where she kind of thinks your only as good as your money. Overall thoughts: I really enjoyed it, it was a great book and I'd read it again. It shows that with hard decisions and hard times, prayer and getting closer to God is all we need. It's a great book for any tween or teen girl that likes a hint of romance and real life, along with God of course. Just a warning if anyone is particular about certain things: there was a few mentions at the end about one of the characters drinking and being drunk, but it's not a lot. Overall: 5/5 stars, I would suggest this to anyone! I absolutely loved Just Got Real. It's modern, it's relevant, it's funny, and I was completely hooked from start to finish. Whilst the dating story is the primary storyline, it's very much Joni who is the main focus of the story, as she moves on with her life after a divorce, the loss of a friend and her daughter leaving home. She takes comfort in her routine but there's no real joy there. I won't go into what happens along the way but by the end I was full of hope for her in the future. I see more of myself in Kate. That might sound bad, but what I mean is, Kate sees her flaws and doesn't like what she sees. She is frustrated with her thoughts towards other people and even with the artificial-ness of those around her, to a point. Kate also puts on a mask of how she wants others to see her, something I tend to do myself.

As I described above, the plot line and outlook of the story seemed interesting and unique; however, upon reading the story I was not only disappointed, but left wanting way more than the book actually had. The set-up is glorious - a woman who joins a dating app with a fake photo meets a man whose photo is the only real thing about him. I whipped through Just Got Real by Jane Fallon in a single sunlounger session and howled with laughter . . . A tautly plotted story of betrayal and revenge, it's threaded with authentic characters and heartwarming friendship -- Clare Macintosh * Good Housekeeping * When 16 year old A.J. Smith has to move from rural Louisiana to just outside Nashville, TN. after her widowed mom reconnects with a high school flame, she's not exactly thrilled about it. She'd much rather stay behind and work on vehicles like she used to when her father was alive. Instead, she finds herself in strange territory and attending a fancy private high school. Her tuition has been paid by a mysterious benefactor and no matter how often or how forcefully she asks her mom, that person's identity remains a secret. The following summer at camp, the two girls continue their dislike of each other, until a surprising moment of openness when A.J. shares her faith with Kate. As their bond grows, they discover that they share an inner resolve to live life as God intended, and to live it in their own individual and original ways.

Her snappy, clever fiction . . . seems to slip down like a glass of nicely chilled white wine. Just Got Real makes no exception’ SUNDAY TELEGRAPH Witty, funny, beautifully written and dotted with life's truths like sprinkles on a birthday cake." - Cathy Kelly
