About this deal

Varnish, by contrast, is a topcoat. It won’t protect the wood on its own. Same goes for paint, wax and wood oil. So, if you want your woodwork to last, start with a few coats of wood preserver, wait until they’re fully dry, then go ahead with the varnish or other decorative topcoat of your choice. Can I use wood preserver on its own, without a topcoat? Ensure that wooden surfaces to be treated with Barrettine Wood Preserver are clean, dry and free from surface dirt, debris and other surface contaminates. New Bare Wood

Our main complaint is that there’s no clear version, so you have to choose a colour – and the waterproof finish is difficult to paint over if you don’t like the shade. The six colours are lovely, though, and include Forest Oak, Autumn Gold and Silver Copse. To seal the shed preserver in to the wood grain and provide the shed the best possible protection, it’s always recommended that once applied, any preservative is over-coated with a suitable top-coat such as an exterior wood oil, paint for sheds, shed stain or shed varnish. This will help to ensure that your shed will last year after year and potentially for decades if well maintained. Types of shed preserver Ronseal Shed & Fence Preserver can be applied with a Ronseal Fence Life Brush, or by dipping. Can also be spray applied with the Selecta 7 Shed and Fence Spray System but is not suitable to be used with Ronseal Fence Sprayer. Find out about a range of fence paints and colours here. Alternatively, you can find out more about specific shed treatments below. Not all wood preservers or stains are suitable for spraying due to their viscosity. Many garden pump sprayers are only suitable for thin liquids like water. There are however a couple of sprayers that are specifically designed for spraying garden shed preservers and stains such as those below. Garden fence preservatives can be easily broken down into 4 types, clear, coloured, solvent-based, and water-based. Although there are a wide range of wood preservatives on the market that are suitable for use on fence panels and posts, they all do a similar job. Solvent-based fence preservatives Areas that have been affected by mould, algae or fungi should be treated with Barrettine Mould and Mildew Cleaner

Where possible, end grain should be dipped or given extra coats to ensure the best possible protection Always do a test area before starting any project and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Only apply in temperatures of between 10°C and 30°C. Shake or stir well prior to and during application to ensure a consistent colour.Characteristics of a solvent-based wood preservers are that the liquid is very thin and has a strong, solvent odour due to the high V.O.C content. Solvent-based preservatives tend to be very thin in consistency and can splash when being poured from the tin. Coloured preservers can stain patios, concrete, stone, slabs and other surfaces so care needs to be taken when pouring. Water-based fence preservatives Ronseal Shed and Fence Preserver: A coloured shed & fence preservative that colours, preserves and nourishes shed and fence timbers Always cover and protect items and areas not to be treated, especially stone, concrete, plastic surfaces and plants, and especially if applying a coloured preserver. Coloured wood preservers will easily stain these surfaces and could ruin some types of plastic. Sealing in a fence preservative Although wood preservers are safe for man, plants and animals when fully dry, they are very harmful to aquatic systems and should be kept well away from garden ponds, streams, drains and other water courses. Pets and children should be kept away from the liquid and freshly treated fences until they are dry. An exterior wood oil will protect garden fences from weathering and keep the wood supple and nourished. With a range of clear and coloured wood oils available, which oil-based fence treatment is best? Our guide will help you decide

Before You Start: Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry and free from surface coatings such as paint, varnish or stain etc. Where timbers are suffering from decay, before applying Ronseal Shed and Fence Preserver, remove all decayed wood and replace with sound, treated timber. Cut out and burn all decayed wood at least 45cm beyond the area of damage. Wood preserver is basically an undercoat. You brush or spray it onto raw, freshly sawn or sanded wood surfaces to stabilise the wood’s moisture content and protect it from rot and decay. If mould, algae or fungi is already present on the shed surface, it must first be treated with a suitable mould and algae cleaner or fungicidal wash, and before applying a wood preservative. Preservers are designed to help prevent biological growth but will not kill it if it is already established. If mould, algae or lichens are already present on the wood, use a suitable shed cleaner to remove mould, algae and lichens. Find out about a range of shed paints and colours here. Cleaning Equipment Those of a certain age will remember when anything wood in the garden used to be treated with Creosote. The sale of Creosote is now regulated and can only be sold to farmers and for other industrial uses. The good news is that there is a safer, more environmentally friendly version called ‘Creocote’. Its low-odour, solvent-free formula contains finely dispersed fungicides and algaecides to provide improved penetration into the wood, compared to standard, solvent-based, wood preservers A question often asked is ‘are water or solvent-based shed preservatives best?’ Truth is that both types contain the same key preserving ingredients. Although solvent-based wood preservers tend to have better penetration, water-based preservers are more user and environmentally friendly. Both can be overcoated with an exterior wood oil or log cabin treatment to seal in the preservative and protect the structure from the effects of weathering. What is the best wood preservative for sheds? So, you can potentially use it on your old shed, but you should prepare the wood first. Otherwise you’re wasting your time and money.Any solvent-based wood preservative can be used on wooden fence panels meaning that it doesn’t necessarily have to be labelled as a ‘shed and fence preservative’. Solvent-based preservers are generally absorbed easier by fence timbers than water-based products, meaning deeper penetration in to the timber panels. Solvent-based wood preservatives are available in clear and coloured formulations from brands such as Ronseal, Cuprinol and Sadolin. Like paint, wood preservers come in solvent-based and water-based varieties. Each type has advantages and disadvantages.
