About this deal

He is very possessive and jealous in his friendship with Gavin, to the extent that he expected a text from him every day of Gavin and Stacey's honeymoon and his emotional incapability to deliver his best man's speech. Gavin and Stacey ran for 3 seasons, as well as a 2019 Christmas Special which was set 10 years later. I only started watching it from the third series, I didn’t really know it was a thing before that! But as soon as I knew what it was, I watched every single episode on Christmas Day. I left my family and I was hooked. I just love that it can make you laugh again and again.” After the popularity of it all, are you going to make Gavin & Stacey parties a regular thing? Jesus (Daniel Curtis) – A friend of Gavin and Smithy's. He only appears in the stag episode; most likely owing to the fact that no one in the group really seems to like him. Smithy only had two hours to complete nearly all his Christmas Shopping, and went to Marks and Spencer's where Stacey is working, just so he can use her Staff discount.

Jean – A character who Bryn invites to Gwen's birthday party, due to guests he'd already invited saying they can't attend. Jean is hated by Gwen however for reasons that weren't really mentioned. Doris warns Bryn not to invite her and does not like her. Jean is not seen on screen, however Gwen sees her and it is unknown what happened next.Harri, Caitlin & Megan Shipman (Gabriel Mitell, Martha Tregonning, Maddison Belle Platt) – Gavin and Stacey's children who first appear in the 2019 Christmas Special. They share names with Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. Smithy is 28 and he is a self-employed builder and decorator. He is very protective of Gavin—he is disappointed when Gavin gets engaged to Stacey and when Gavin and Stacey go on a honeymoon, he calls Gavin every day for the three weeks they are there, and gets angry at Gavin for leaving his phone off. He loves Gavin's parents more than his own and has an unseen girlfriend called Lucy, who, according to Smithy, is seventeen and three-quarter years old. Griff ( Alan David) – friend of Bryn and Doris. He attended Gavin and Stacey's wedding with Doris in Series 1. OH! Simply put, Nessa IS Gavin and Stacey. Ruth Jones’ writing is perfect, her characterisation golden. I love that the show just gets more and more surreal with Nessa’s random anecdotes and history. Her life could have 80 million spin-offs and all would be fascinating. Noel from Hear’Say and John Prescott at her and Dave’s wedding will never not be funny. Pam

Series 2 sees big changes for Smithy, as he finds out he is the father of Nessa's baby. Being the decent fella he is, he offered to support Nessa, even though she begins dating Dave (whom she previously dated). Relationships can go any number of different ways, and Gavin & Stacey’s biggest strength is in showing us the whole gamut of possibilities. Not just in the contrast between Gavin’s love life and Smithy’s, but also in the romantic entanglements of the supporting characters. Fingers ( Samuel Anderson) – A friend of Gavin and Smithy's. He is so named because of his womanizing attitude. He has an on-off relationship with Stacey's friend, Louise.Oh my Christ! If Pam isn’t ranking at the top of your Gavin and Stacey characters tier list, you and me are going to fall out today Michael! Every note of Pam is perfect, and Alison Steadman makes her legendary in every scene. There are too many funny moments to name, but Three Steaks Pam (viz a viz chips) is probs my favourite. I love when she gets sayings wrong (No way, blasé) and I love when she despises Smithy’s mum. She’s a gay icon. Related stories recommended by this writer:

When Dave becomes engaged to Nessa, Smithy thinks that it is a bad idea as he thinks that Dave shouldn't act as Baby Neil's father. He tells Nessa not to marry him, she cannot understand why as it is her business, and not for Smithy to get involved in despite the fact that she can tell it is about Baby Neil. Edna Sutcliffe ( Edna Doré) – Pete's mother, only seen once in the Christmas Special, where Pete forgot her and she stayed behind the bar overnight.

He loves unusual beer, paintball and West Ham United. When Nessa gives birth to their son they name him Neil after Smithy himself and Nessa's father. In the series finale, Smithy stops Nessa's wedding declaring his feelings for her, thus causing Nessa and Dave (Coaches) not to get married. He is shown to have obvious similarities to Nessa, such as: refusing to share food, being very upfront, protective of their best friends, and they like most of the same food and drink, such as KFC, corn on the cob, and Irn-Bru. Smithy wears his heart on his sleeve and is given to intense public displays of emotion, and will cry or sulk with little provocation. Smithy eats, drinks and smokes to excess and is overweight. Bryn: “I cannot speak the Welsh language. It’s a constant source of embarrassment to me, but Welsh is not my mother tongue.” I’ve rewatched all 20 episodes before writing this, and I still couldn’t tell you what they actually do for a living. Something relating to computers – as Gav explains to Bryn after a lengthy tutorial from Rob Brydon’s Welshman about the importance of remembering ‘www.’– is all the show tells us. Because of course, these day jobs aren’t really important. What is important? That would be the bond that the titular duo has formed over countless work-related phone-calls. But once Dave and Nessa's wedding day arrives (Smithy is going to look after Baby Neil until they return from their honeymoon), but Smithy decides to stop the wedding. He reveals that Nessa was only marrying Dave because it was an easy option and because she felt that Smithy wasn't around enough to support her and Baby Neil. And six months later he has migrated to Barry and has grown a liking to Nessa but it likely or unlikely they're a couple.

Scott – One of Doris' much younger boyfriends, whom she casually describes as "a bit of a pothead". Less hard-working writers might think that two big comedic characters are enough, but Corden and Jones don’t stop there. Pam, Gavin’s mum, could easily have been a boring side-note. But instead Alison Steadman’s character is a bombastic force of nature, who’d pretend she was a vegetarian if it meant keeping the in-laws happy, mount a protest/BBQ against a pylon being erected, and happily start a race war with the Welsh contingent after a few drinks. She’s paranoid, overly-excitable and utterly hilarious. Lucy – Smithy's much younger girlfriend, who is still in secondary school. She is never seen on-screen, and dumps Smithy in Series 2 when he discovers that she has been seeing somebody else. In a running joke meant to illustrate the age gap between her and Smithy, she is often mentioned to be doing activities that would normally be associated with younger people (such as Brownies or trampolining). Ar Sheridan starred as Smithy’s sister before she became the ITV drama go to girly, and when she was still dating James Corden (cursed). I always enjoy her carnage, even if she’s a pretty minor character. Deano Nessa on politics] “This is O-Bama alright? Not to be confused with O-Sama. O-Bama. O-Sama. Very different people, with very different ideas.”Bryn on new products] “You think they’ve thought of it all. You think, ‘Where can they go with this next?’ and then they hit you with it. I mean mint Baileys! Whatever will they think of next!?” (Photo: BBC)
