About this deal

Woody Haralson is in this, but as per usual, he's weird quirky and really adds so little to the movie! But there is one idea that Östlund seems intent on treating seriously, and that's the idea of the inequality between women and men. To avoid spoilers, it's safest to return to Yaya, and the argument over the bill. Triangle of Sadness," Reviewed: We're on a Yacht and We're Puking". The New Yorker. 6 October 2022. Archived from the original on 6 October 2022 . Retrieved 6 October 2022. Alysha Prasad of One Room With A View called it "Utterly unhinged in the best way possible, guaranteed to elicit enough laughter to make your stomach ache, while also leaving you with plenty to think about afterwards." [33] David Kaplan of Kaplan vs. Kaplan praised the ensemble cast as "completely compelling, even if some of the characters are unsavory." [34] Aaron Neuwirth of We Live Entertainment described it as containing "what’s likely the grossest set piece I’ve seen in a movie awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival." [35] Gabi Zeitsman of Channel 24 (South Africa) commented, "if you loved White Lotus and satire aimed at the beautiful and rich, this is a definite must-watch. The fact that it won the Palme d'Or is in itself almost satirical..." [36] "Don't go in expecting art-house intellectualism," wrote Kyle Smith of the Wall Street Journal, "The movie is as loaded with fun as it is with social implications." [37] Paul Byrnes of the Sydney Morning Herald commented, "For Östlund, subtlety is overrated. Triangle of Sadness shows us why he has a point. It’s a spectacular demolition of modern life, a disruptor movie full of ideas and nuance, as violent in its way as a Pieter Bruegel painting." [38] Kevin Maher of The Times detected more nuance in the film, however, stating: "Yes, the metaphor can seem very on-the-nose: the super rich, in this economic climate especially, are obscene and repulsive! But it's a film of great subtlety (really) and benefits from multiple viewings." [39]

Spoiler alert: This article contains spoilers from Triangle of Sadness.] Charlbi Dean as Yaya | Neon ‘Triangle of Sadness’ ending explained It speaks to the state of current society when 2022 churned out not one, but three films that focus on the absurdity of the rich. While The Menu (2022) focused on the "foodie" culture that surrounds so many wealthy individuals, Glass Onion (2022) highlighted those "influencers" who try to disrupt industries. The one film I feel best captured the satire of the ultra-wealthy was definitely Triangle of Sadness (2022). The humor was the darkest of all three, but it went further than the other two in exposing the uselessness of the rich. Triangle of Sadness has received much critical acclaim and comes around with a plot that sounds interesting on paper. The truth is however that this movie is vapid, pretentious and exhausting drivel that doesn't deserve the attention it's getting. Let me point out how I have come to this conclusion. What to know

Abigail’s secret history may also help viewers decide how to interpret the end of Triangle of Sadness, which writer-director Östlund ( Force Majeure, The Square) leaves as a provocation for the audience.

Carl, in some ways, is the most relatable, even sympathetic, character in the piece. He doesn’t come from a world of privilege and is the closest to hinting that its excesses can be repulsive. But Östlund doesn’t spare any characters his searing contempt, and as Carl slowly unravels he is shown to be as insecure and spineless as the rest. Perhaps you could argue against her fatalistic assertion. But fast-forward to the film's finale, and there's nothing ambivalent about what befalls Carl in the final stretches of the movie, as he gets to learn what it's really like to submit to gendered power.Vargoz, Cécile (28 May 2022). "Cannes 2022: le Prix des cinémas art et essai décerné". Boxoffice Pro (in French). Archived from the original on 28 May 2022 . Retrieved 28 May 2022. When I was doing Force Majeure, that film had quite a good reputation in the U.S., [so] I was approached by many actors and actresses. When I was doing The Square, I was working with Elisabeth Moss and Dominic West, and I felt that I could handle the English language, also directing, even if it’s not my mother tongue. And then I knew that if I’m making a film that takes place in the fashion world, and on a luxury yacht, it’s really an international setting, so there’s a possibility to do something in the English language without making it seem too constructed. And with films in the English language, you reach a wider distribution, and it gives us a much broader range and possibilities when it came to the actors. But I was really nervous when I was going to direct in English because I was not 100 percent sure that I would catch the nuances and capture everything as a director. I think I’m still a better director in the Swedish language, but I’m improving. The Delusional Triangle of Sadness". National Review. 26 October 2022. Archived from the original on 22 January 2023 . Conventional etiquette suggests it's the man's responsibility to pay, but as a male model, Carl earns significantly less than Yaya, and, he reminds her, it's her shout. It sinks in for a moment that they each have very different ideas about what's expected of them at this juncture, and it's not long before the tension erupts into an all-out argument over the power imbalance in their relationship, and gender expectations more generally. Triangle of Sadness". British Board of Film Classification. 4 October 2022. Archived from the original on 22 November 2022 . Retrieved 4 October 2022.If any one person on that yacht had showed Abigail some measure of kindness, or some personal connection, I think her arc would have taken a totally different journey, a totally different spike on it,” she says. “So I hope viewers think about that, about adding a little personal touch, or some extra kindness to people that they encounter. It’s not even workers, it’s just being kind in general, to anyone. Why do we have to be kind to people in power only? I think kindness should reach every human being, because it should be our nature to be kind to each other, and not to be evil or violent.” Was there any introspection as to the hypocrisy of their position? The cinematic equivalent of a western teenager wearing a Che Guevara t-shirt to their private school. Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund wants to make films that get people talking, and his latest — Neon’s Triangle of Sadness, the 2022 Palme d’Or winner, now nominated for three Oscars, including best picture — did exactly that. Set on a yacht for the super-rich that sinks and leaves its guests clamoring for survival on an island, the film is a social satire that also happens to include a 15-minute vomit scene. Its shifting focus means Carl is not, strictly speaking, the film's protagonist, but his questioning of gender expectations in the first act echoes throughout the film, in ways he, for one, will least expect. The winner of the 2022 Cannes Film Festival's coveted Palme d'Or prize, Ruben Östlund's Oscar nominated latest slice of melancholy and home truths about the human condition is going to be a divisive exercise for audiences as the Swedish director examines the divide between the haves and the have nots in an epic darkly comedic operation that will likely ensure it's sometime between trips to your local seafood market. She definitely grew up by a lake or the ocean,” De Leon says. “She lived somewhere in Cavite, a province on the edge of Luzon, where I come from. I grew up in the city, so the closest I ever got to nature was dragonflies and butterflies. She grew up where her mother would go to a river and do their laundry there, by the running water, and Abigail would play with the other kids there, and catch fish and tadpoles. That’s why she got really good at fishing, because she started early in life.” New York Film Festival Main Slate Announced". Film at Lincoln Center. 9 August 2022. The film starts off on the wrong foot with a long, long argument between its two protagonists. It's clearly supposed to show how shallow rich people are, but the scene should be around two minutes and instead takes up what feels like twenty. Both characters are intensely irritating: again, not on its own an issue, but it's not justified sufficiently to make it worthwhile. Triangle of Sadness". Cannes Film Festival.
