Obviously, a smart fan is more expensive than a standard, non-smart fan, but it’s a reasonable investment once you factor in the costs and savings.
There are 3-speed settings, a timer that can be set for up to 8 hours, and a scheduling mode, letting you set up your fan to turn on, for example, half an hour before you get home. The Whisper Flex is an all-rounder. It has 26 settings, is energy efficient and has a powerful motor with double fan blades. Moreover, thanks to the horizontal and vertical swing, the wind blows in all directions. And all this with minimal noise production. Otherwise, the best thing about this tower fan is that it offers an efficient and economical way to cool larger areas. It pushes through air at speeds of up to 3.2m/sec at the highest of its five speed settings, or 3.3m/sec in Turbo mode. True, it’s a little loud when maxed out, at 44.4 to 45.2dB, but on its next to lowest setting you can still hit speeds of 2.1m/sec, with the noise reduced to around 32dB – and it will only use around 20W while doing so. Throw in the competitive price, and you have a great tower fan for bigger bedrooms. The fan itself is a high power, with double rotor blades that pump out a lot of air while staying whisper quiet, from as low as 13db up to 50db. It can be adjusted in height so it can be placed on a desk or set up on a floor, and has vertical as well as horizontal tilt, giving you a huge variety of options when it comes to set up. We’re used to product names that bear little relation to reality, but the Whisper Flex Smart really is very quiet indeed. At its lowest speed setting, you can just about make it out in a quiet room. It wouldn’t disturb even the lightest sleeper. There’s considerably more noise once the speed setting enters double digits, but even flat-out it’s quieter than most other fans we’ve tested.
This is a missed opportunity, it would have been a very nice feature if this could have been adjusted via the app to set the most effective range of the fan. It’s an interesting proposition, but there’s no point adding smart features if the underlying fan isn’t up to it. We were keen to put it through its paces. Either way, power consumption is low, making it one of the more frugal options out there. The volume levels at higher speed settings can get pretty high, reaching 50dB at full tilt. It’s nicely designed, easy to use and capable of pushing through a lot of air. The app and voice controls are just the icing on the cake. It just would have been nice to have an option to turn the fan off completely without having to unplug it and let the battery or battery fully discharge if you leave it in. The height adjustment comes down to the addition or subtraction of the 'extension tube', so there are only two height options – the extension-tube-less 60cm height, that's perfect for sitting on top of a desk, bedside table, or sideboard, and the 104cm height that you can create by adding the extension tube in to turn the fan into a freestanding pedestal.
In night mode, the display switches off completely after 10 seconds to ensure a good night's sleep. The display can be reactivated by pressing the operating button. At the lowest speed the fan produces only 13 dBa and thanks to the double blade design the cutting wind noise is reduced. So should you buy the Duux Whisper Flex Ultimate Fan? Well, this fan is an investment, coming in at nearly twice the price of the second most expensive fan we've reviewed, the EcoAir Kinetic Fan, and over eight times more expensive than the much cheaper Honeywell Turbo Force Power Fan, so it really all depends on your budget and how much you value the Duux Whisper Flex Ultimate Fan's five main plus points. Choose from 26 adjustable speeds and multiple modes. In natural wind mode, wind speeds are alternated to simulate real wind. Night mode ensures a good night’s sleep thanks to minimal noise production and the automatically dimmed screen. The square tower design is sleek and modern, standing at just over a meter tall, with a silver body.
