About this deal

Jean-Baptiste and Josephine Combier made their original Triple Sec with Haitian bitter oranges and a sweeter variety from Valencia in Spain. They sun-dried the peels of the fruits and infused their base spirit for at least 48h with these peels before distilling their liqueur from them. To mark the company’s 300th anniversary in 1995, De Kuyper was granted the designation ‘Royal’ by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix. The company then changed their official name to De Kuyper Royal Distillers. After all these years, De Kuyper Royal Distillers is still a family business.

The most popular Triple Sec brands are Combier and Cointreau. Other popular brands are Grand Marnier, DeKuyper, and Bols. -With Grand Marnier being close but not the same as a Triple Sec. Jean-Baptiste and Josephine Combier, the likely inventors of Triple Sec, opened their candy shop in Samour in 1834, and this company is still in business today. Aldi Stores (Australia) collected top awards for its O’Donnells Christmas Pudding Country Cream, and O’Donnells Tiramisu. The Christmas Pudding bottling was “spot on Christmas-pudding-spice and raisin”, while the Tiramisu entry had a “beautiful nose – exactly like tiramisu”, leading to “chocolate, coffee, dessert” flavours on the palate. “Flipping delicious,” enthused Pamplin.

A mammoth flight of Fruit liqueurs were divided among the judges next, and the section resulted in an enormous nine Master medals being awarded. Holunderblütenlikör grabbed a Gold after delivering “elegant and pungent elderflower aromas”. Flora’s Elderflower and Elderberry Liqueur secured a Gold for balancing “slight sourness” with the “sweetness of the elderflower”. Athavia praised the “aromatic nuances” in both entries. Recently, the category has seen a flurry of activity, including new marketing campaigns from rum-based liqueur Malibu, product launches, and sustainable certification as Baileys – the world’s largest liqueur brand by volume – became a B Corp-certified business. However, the longevity of the liqueur category’s success can only continue if the quality of products available meet the high standards expected by both the trade and consumers. I really enjoy Rhum Clement Créole Shrubb,” says Rob Vogel, bar manager at Monarque in Baltimore. “This intense orange liqueur is made with Agricole rhum that lends to aromas of fresh-cut grass and lemon peel. Clement has also added the 'secret' Creole spices that contribute to wonderful warming flavors.”

Anora Group gained a trio of medals – one Master and two Golds – in the following flight of Confectionery liqueurs. The Master medal was awarded to Koskenkorva Salmiakki-Raspberry (liquorice and raspberry). The judges were impressed with how well the “raspberry cleanly shines through the liquorice”. Chambers said: “This blew my mind, especially the integration of the flavours with such a bold ingredient as liquorice; it was amazing.” Triple sec is an orange-flavored liqueur. That said, there's surprisingly a plethora of tastes when it comes to the brands. Some offer flavor notes of spices, while others are cloying oversweet or too bitter. Find one that is pleasing to your taste and well balanced in flavor. Four Gold medals were also enjoyed: “malty, sweet, and slightly smoky” Beeble Original (Honey Whisky); “malty and complex” Beeble Swarm (Honey Rum); The Whistler Irish Honey Liqueur, with notes of “pancake syrup and butter toffee”; and Tullamore Dew Honey, with “distinct whisky and honey sweetness”. Prousaefs said: “This was a very diverse and complex category. Most of the samples were on the whisky side, resembling maltiness.”The final heat of the day was dedicated to Vegan liqueurs, and living up to the Gold standard was Vana Tallinn Coconut. The product was found to have a “vibrant coconut aroma”, leading to a “bold, creamy palate with powerful coconut on the finish”.

The type of oranges used for Triple Sec is not defined. And the popular brands don't reveal all the varieties they are using. But a traditional variety most certainly part of many orange liqueurs is the Seville orange. Vogel suggests experimenting with this orange liqueur during the cooler months. Consider using this in a Creole Royale (Champagne plus a dash of Angostura bitters) or a Sidecar. Now let’s take a look at what brands of Triple Sec are available. Which Brand of Triple Sec should I use?

DeKuyper® Triple Sec

Triple Sec is an orange-flavored liqueur. It once was a popular French digestif and is now a generic term for a liqueur made from orange peels and a sugar beet spirit base. Cointreau vs Triple Sec: what’s the difference between these orange liqueurs? When to use one or the other? Here’s what you need to know. Cointreau is one of the best-known brands of Triple Sec on the market today. Cointreau has been around since the 19th Century, so it’s safe to say they know what they’re doing. Yet, when oranges ripen, the essential oils seep through the skin into the fruit flesh. And once it's inside the pulp, it's lost for the producers of Triple Sec. How to use Triple Sec? Fun fact: the bottle was originally named Curaçao Marnier because of its high brandy content, but after Cesar Ritz, the founder of the Ritz Hotel, dubbed it a "grand liqueur," the name was changed.
