About this deal

A Carbon monoxide alarm detector where there is a carbon-fuelled appliance such as boilers, fires (including open fires), heaters and stoves or a flue.

Testing is done manually by a simple press and hold of the large central button. Visual test red light flashes also go off around every 30 or so seconds, so if you feel you’ve gone a little while without seeing the light, you know you have to act. When dangerous levels have previously been detected, but the threat is still there, the peak level memory will give you voice and LED notifications which encourage you to act. If there is a false alarm, and you safely know there is no threat, a hush button will allow you to temporarily silence the alarm. Heat (thermal) alarms detect heat (hot air) instead of smoke. The alarm is triggered when the temperature within the sensor chamber reaches over 58 degrees Celsius – generally when a fire is well established. This one has Thermoptek technology, which essentially means it can detect both smouldering slow fires and a rapid rise in temperature, which signals a fast fire. For a person to begin feeling the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning, they would need to be exposed to a carbon monoxide level of 50 parts per million (ppm) for eight hours. An alarm’s response time will vary depending on the level of carbon monoxide in the air. For example, an alarm will sound after three and a half hours of continuous exposure at a level of 50ppm, yet will sound after eight minutes of continuous exposure at a level of 400ppm.” Following the Grenfell Tower fire in London the Scottish Government announced new fire and safety standards to ensure all households including homeowners, private landlords and social housing are protected against fire and carbon monoxide. Most manufacturers suggest locating your alarm next to or near a gas appliance, and it’s worth having one in the same room as any fire or wood-burning stove. It should be around 1.5m from the ground and at least 30cm away from any ceiling, and most can be mounted on a worktop, shelf or table – or simply mounted on the wall. You can also silence any false alarms from the phone, to save you having to reach for the button and stop what you’re doing. If you want to buy several Eve alarms, they are easy to sync with each other to ensure effective communication, and mass sound should something be up.

It’s also worth noting that the test button on these devices doesn’t actually test the sensor – it only makes sure that the circuit’s working.

Smart smoke alarms are designed to sound the alarm when they detect smoke, as a conventional smoke alarm would. But the unique selling point of a smart smoke alarm is the ability to send alerts to your phone when there’s a fire. The health effects of CO depend on the concentration and length of exposure (carbon monoxide concentration is measured in parts per million). According to respected CO alarm manufacturer Kidde, “a carbon monoxide detector is a time-weighted alarm that measures the buildup of carbon monoxide in a house. It is supplied with a replaceable Duracell battery, which should last for around five years so you’ll only have to replace it once in the smoke alarms lifespan. Fitting is simple, thanks to the smart clipping mechanism. Split-Spectrum Sensor– The latest technology, championed by Nest Home. Their smoke alarms use a combination of both of the above to detect risks, looking for both smouldering and flaming fires. It is a technology which is commonly used in commercial environments but has now gone fully residential too. Battery alarms are much easier to install, however. There is no wiring to get right, and you’re a bit more flexible in terms of positioning. Smart Smoke DetectorsThe humidity sensor and advanced algorithm can sense any false alarms before it disturbs you so that you won’t be bothered by the steam from a shower and it’ll learn what not to look out for. We like the added touch of the lighting, which can sync with the alarm but also illuminate your path to safety if necessary. There is a ten-year battery built-in, and it isn’t replaceable so bear this in mind before you buy. They are big in America though, so watch this space for smart fire and smoke alarms becoming the norm here too. Extra Functionality

Northern Ireland has Technical BookletE: 2012 which has similar legislation as the building regulations BS 5839. It requires that all households should have at least: If you own a Nest smoke and CO alarm, you will be able to continue to use it but it will need to be in addition to interlinked smoke and heat alarms. Having said this, many now do have built-in alarms too, in case of a system failure. How Long Do Smoke Detectors Last? Some smart models sound an alarm on your smartphone and through the alarm itself when triggered – this is the most helpful kind of smart alarm. A combination alarm if you’re concerned about CO as well as fires. The voice alarm will tell you which concern has been detected, so you know how exactly you need to react. Their distinguishing feature is the fact that they can be linked to other alarms, both heat and smoke alarms, so that when one senses danger they all sound.
