About this deal

Faceting a gemstone improves its fire, luster and brilliance. Fire is the splitting of white light into its constituent rainbow of colors and is famous in Diamonds, and also present in many other stones, including Sphene and Zircon. Luster is the surface reflection of the exterior of the gem, the light that is bouncing off the stone without entering it. Brilliance is the return of light to the eye from within the gem. These three types of light interaction are what we might informally refer to as ‘sparkle’. A lapidarist does the faceting work on a cutting wheel. It takes many years to learn this art to a proficient level, and these skills are often passed down family lines. The technology that drives these cutting wheels may have improved, but the incredible skills are ancient. Jewelry Design

Some gemstones will change color when they’re viewed in different types of light. This happens because the gemstones absorb different wavelengths of light depending on the kind of light – such as sunlight and candlelight. Alexandrite looks a deep forest green in daylight but will often appear almost Ruby red by candlelight. Csarite® has a beautiful olive green hue in sunlight but shows flashes of pink and champagne under candlelight. There are varieties of Sapphire, Fluorite and Garnet that also change in this way – it is a phenomenal sight to see. Phosphorescence Did you know that glittering refers to the luster of the gold or the quality of the light that is reflected from its surface? The gleaming sheen of polished gold contrasts sharply with the dull luster of raw gold, which barely reflects when compared to its brilliant metallic luster. There are only four stones in the world classified as precious gemstones and we are proud to say we use them all in our jewellery and rings. The “Big Four” are: Diamond Adamantine Silky. Greasy? Gemologists use various evocative terms to describe gemstone luster. This refers to the appearance of a gem’s surface when it reflects light. A type of carved cab. The engraved design is made by cutting away the top layer to create a shape that appears raised from the rest of the gem’s body. This could be a face, animal, flower, etc.

Citrine varies in colour from yellow and gold through to orange-brown shades. They are the yellow variety of crystalline quartz and are the second most popular quartz after amethyst. Like amethyst, citrine is an affordable gemstone and is also available in larger sizes. This gemstone looks striking set in both silver and gold. Take a look at Sheila's Ogham cufflinks and Tidal pendant. Tourmaline Additionally, the gypsum would display a silky luster if it was found in aggregates of long fibers. So, it’s possible that luster won’t be a helpful diagnostic feature for recognizing gypsum or other gemstones! Despite being a basic component of minerals, luster can change even within a single crystal. You could see variations depending on which face of the crystal you examine due to the mineral’s state of aggregation.

This color changing miracle was first discovered in Russia in 1830. The original mine has long since been depleted, but we still source a variety from India. A gem cut is its intricate design. Cutting sculpts a gem from its initial roughness or smoothness to improve its appearance and make it more desirable as a piece of jewelry. What is a modified cut? I think it's safe to say that no matter how many times we look at a diamond or other precious stones, we're still amazed by their beauty. But why are they so special? The answer lies in a combination of physics and chemistry. In this article, we will discover the fascinating science behind the beautiful sparkle of gemstones and what causes them to shine. Sheila uses both precious and semi-precious stones throughout her jewellery designs, with each stone set-by-hand in our Orkney workshop. We carefully source gemstones for their quality and colour ensuring you receive the best quality stones. All of our gemstones are natural except for cubic zirconia, which are synthetic. There are many beautiful red gemstones, and Ruby is the king of them all. Here’s how to define the facets. The point or edge creating the tip at the bottom of your gem. A flatter bottom avoids the risk of chipping. Furthermore, the same gemstone might have different types of luster based on its origin, formation conditions, and a variety of other factors. Therefore, it is far from an exact science. Amethyst is the purple variety of crystalline quartz, with colours ranging from pale lilac through to deep reddish purple. Unlike many gems, amethyst is readily available in larger sizes and, due to this, even larger stones are comparatively affordable. These vibrant stones have been used in jewellery throughout history and Sheila has set amethysts in jewellery inspired by tradition. Take a look at the Celtic Trinity collection, Thistle collection and Sheila's Ogham kilt pin. Citrine Tourmaline is the true gemstone of the rainbow, with almost every hue having been discovered. Along with high quality diamonds, blue sapphires and red rubies, the green emerald is one of the “big four”. Unlike the other three, however, emeralds are more fragile and exposure to excessive moisture should be avoided. High Value Semi-Precious Gemstones The base of your gemstone (below the girdle).
