I had to pop the hose clips off to remove the intake hose, and since I don't have the right pliers to refit the factory clips properly, I had to go and buy some normal worm drive circlips. I found the part under the oil filter was soaked with oil, the sound deadening stuff was saturated with it! This suggests either an oil leak, which I can't find any evidence of (it would have to be a pretty damn big one!), or a big spill from the filter when the oil was changed last time. It smelled really strong as well, which explains what I've been smelling occasionally when driving, which I thought was a leaking exhaust - but I now think it's this. Cleaned it all up as best I could. It has been serviced. After 200 miles it is now down 0.5 litre. It has never lost a drop in 18K. I'm hoping it wasn't "topped off" at the end of the change. Otherwise I've got a problem.
