If you have a Dometic fridge that runs on gas - or if you have any other gas-powered appliances in your caravan - you should also look into installing a carbon monoxide detector. This essential piece of equipment will alert you and your family if any gas appliances are producing toxic fumes. Additionally, if your caravan awning uses guy-wires for stability, they can sometimes pose a tripping hazard. Make the lines more visible by hanging coloured ribbon from them to help avoid painful falls. You can also poke holes in tennis balls and place them over the ground pegs - this will make them stand out and will add some padding in case somebody does fall on one.
We are experienced caravanners with a brand new 2017 Swift Conqueror 645 and Dometic 190 litre RMD 551 Tower Fridge Freezer. Does anyone else have issues with this model fridge or any advice please? Whatever kind of awning you have, be sure to take good care of it so that it lasts through many holidays. One of the best ways to do this is to wipe it down thoroughly to remove dirt and moisture before storing. A +1 for De-Ox powder and Gell from me for my old motorbike and other rusty stuff, however I also use Citric Acid ( the base ingredient of De-Ox ) and cheaper, it just takes a bit longer, it's none toxic and can be tipped down a drain. Get the most from your caravan's generatorIf you travel to locations where electricity hook-ups are not available, a Dometic generator can be a very welcome accessory for your caravan. For Dometic and Thetford refrigerators, a winter cover is available to fit over the ventilator grilles. This can be used when the refrigerator is being run on gas as well as mains. However, this may not be the case with other manufacturers' covers - if in doubt consult your dealer or caravan manufacturer. The covers help to control the performance of the refrigerator in cold conditions and should ideally be fitted when the outside (ambient) temperature is below 10ºC (50ºF) for Dometic refrigerators and below 8ºC (46ºF) for Thetford refrigerators. They should be removed when not required, otherwise the performance of the refrigerator could be adversely affected, particularly in warm weather. Servicing Caravan refrigerators can be operated on both types of LPG but it is important that the gas pressure shown on the data plate corresponds with your gas regulator. Cooling on gas instead of mains makes no difference to rate of cooling or maintenance of temperatures.

Always remember to empty out the refrigerator between trips one when storing your vehicle – food items left in the fridge for long periods could contaminate the unit. After disconnecting and defrosting, clean the fridge using a soft cloth and warm (not hot), weak solution of bicarbonate of soda. Finally, wipe over with a cloth and plain water and finish with a dry cloth. If something has left a strong odour in the fridge which washing alone cannot shift, try making a paste out of the bicarbonate of soda and water, and smear this in the refrigerator and leave overnight. Rinse off with warm water, clean and dry - this should cure the problem. Winter operation There are several rust removers (as opposed to rust converters) that I have used over the years restoring classic cars that are very good. One is a product made by Bilt Hamber called "De-Ox". You mix it with water and leave the parts to soak and it removes all traces of corrosion leaving them sand-blast clean. Hammerite do a similar product but I found that it needed soaking for longer. Once cleaned the rusted areas will be susceptible to future corrosion and will need protecting so a few coats of clear lacquer will re-protect everything. Load up some non-perishable items like bottles of mineral water and keep the refrigerator running for three hours or more on either mains or gas.
Because of safety risks, it is strongly recommended that you do not operate on bottled gas whilst on tow. A naked flame is prohibited at petrol stations, motorway service areas and in most tunnels. Temperature rises when moving from setting 3 to 5 e.g. From 2 degrees to 9 degrees over 3 hours @ 18 degree ambient.
