About this deal

Lunar observations were particularly enjoyable, with plenty of detail visible in the craters and not too much false colour on the limb.

A used Inspire 100AZ is a nice scope, but if it’s not taken care of well, its many plastic parts could cause irreparable damage if it’s not kept up. Barring that, however, a used Inspire 100AZ will be fine if you can get it for a reasonable price-our recommendation is to never pay more than 80% of the new cost for a new telescope, eyepiece, or piece of astronomical gear. There may be something in the camera’s field of view that is affecting the phone’s ability to “sense” stars, such as power lines, trees, or the edge of a building. Try moving to an area with a clearer view of the night sky, without interference from anything on land. Although this telescope and its non-motorised mount are not designed with astrophotography in mind, the Inspire 100AZ’s dust cap has a novel feature – you can strap a smartphone to it and then attach the pairing to one of the two eyepieces that come with the scope. Select all the files shown in the “StarSense Explorer” folder and copy them to a folder on your computer.

Never look directly at the Sun with the naked eye or with an optic (unless you have the proper solar filter). Permanent and irreversible eye damage may result. So those are the basics, but which of our chosen contenders for the best intermediate telescope you can buy will best suit your own particular requirements? Read on to find out… Celestron Inspire 100AZ vs Meade Polaris 114mm reflector telescope: design and features The Moon may be very bright in the night sky. The Moon’s big, bright disc can blind StarSense Explorer so that it cannot locate objects near the Moon. To see if this is the problem, try selecting another object to view in a different part of the night sky. Also, keep in mind that any deep-sky objects will appear washed out when the Moon is bright in the night sky. The best nights to observe are when the Moon is in or near the New Moon phase. StarSense Explorer uses patented technology and your smartphone to determine exactly where the telescope is pointed in the night sky. A Lost in Space Algorithm (LISA), like the ones satellites use in orbit to correctly orient themselves, helps the app match star patterns it detects overhead to its internal database.

Nevertheless, at around the 200x range and below, the Inspire 100AZ will allow you to make out quite a lot of great celestial objects : Setting up the telescope is a breeze and will have you observing in no time. Even on your first time out, you can assemble the telescope and its accessories in just a few minutes. There is no extra tray to attach to the tripod as it is built in. The adjustable tripod legs allow you to customize the telescope’s height or place it on raised surfaces like a picnic table. The integrated flashlight fits in the mount to illuminate the tripod tray, so you can easily find your accessories. The total telescope kit is perfect for impromptu observing sessions or transporting wherever life’s adventures take you. The Celestron Inspire 100AZ is a portable short refractor telescope that is ideal for viewing the sky and the ground. The Inspire 100AZ has the biggest aperture of the Inspire family of telescopes, and its short tube provides a wider field of view ideal for viewing the planets, moon, star clusters, and brighter deep-sky objects like the Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy at night. The optical tube is also perfect for use as a spotting scope during the day thanks to the erect image star diagonal.

The sky may be too cloudy or hazy. Unfortunately, there’s not much that can be done about this beyond waiting for a clearer night to observe. As general rule, if you can’t see many stars with your eyes, then conditions will likely not permit the camera to “see” enough stars, either. The Inspire 100AZ is a device I would say is very much a beginner level system with sub par specs for astronomy and a few design flaws however, this doesn’t mean it’s a terrible device all round. Terrestrially, the telescope doubles up to be used as a Spotting Scope which will enable you to use it to enjoy when Bird-Watching, Hiking, or simple land-observations. Just use the provided Star Diagonal and you can easily erect your images.

Never use your optic to project an image of the Sun onto any surface. Internal heat build-up can damage the optic and any accessories attached to it refractor with fully-coated optics and enough light gathering ability to view all the best celestial objects. Special edition Popular Science branding makes your optical tube stand out. There are plenty of keen amateur astronomers who love watching the stars and know how to handle a telescope, but can't quite stretch to the price of a high-end device. Enter the mid-range or intermediate telescope. You'll pay maybe two or three times as much as you'd need to spend on one of the best telescopes for beginners (see our Celestron 21039 PowerSeeker 50AZ vs National Geographic Refractor 60/700 AZ guide for two great low-end options), but that will still fall short of the three times again that a truly range topping telescope will cost (such as the Orion SkyView Pro 8 GoTo vs Celestron Nexstar 8SE). Red LED flashlight - Stowed in the center of the mount head, the flashlight can be used to gently illuminate the accessory tray or can be removed for use as a spotlight when needed. Select all the files shown in the “StarSense Documents” section and copy them to a folder on your computer.

While other astronomy apps may claim that they can help you find objects, they rely exclusively on the phone’s gyros and accelerometers, which aren’t as accurate as LISA technology. No other app can accurately tell you when your target is visible in the eyepiece. There’s also a small red flashlight included with the Inspire telescopes, which mounts to the centre of the hub of the tripod below the mount head and can be detached from the mount with the turn of a knob. It’s a little too bright to use as a plain flashlight at night, but the diffuser built into the tripod makes it into a really great tray light to softly illuminate your accessories without completely ruining your night vision.
