Unlike other hardwood plants, conifers need very little pruning. However, if green branches appear in trees with coloured or variegated foliage, these should be pruned more often.

Conifers also need decent draining, so do not plant them in very heavy clay soil or else you will risk drowning the plant. Our pot grown Chamaecyparis Ellwood’s Gold can be planted at any time of the year. Firstly, remove weeds and grass within a metre of your desired planting hole, then dig a square hole as deep as your root mass and approximately 2x as wide. To help Ellwood’s Gold establish more effectively, we advise applying Mycorrhizal fungi (sprinkle in the hole for pot grown trees), especially if you have poor soil.

Plant Care

Soil is moist without being soggy because the texture of the soil allows excess moisture to drain away. Most plants like about 1 inch of water per week. Amending your soil with compost will help improve texture and water holding or draining capacity. A 3 inch layer of mulch will help to maintain soil moisture and studies have shown that mulched plants grow faster than non-mulched plants.

Depending on which nutrient is deficient, mulching, using compost or using a spray enriched with the right nutrients is the remedy to this common ailment. Once planted, keep the area free of competing weeds and grass for the first couple of growing seasons. Installing a mulch mat will aid in this. A hole no less than 1m across and 25cm deep should be dug when planting your conifer. Add organic material such as compost or manure to the hole, and fill it in carefully so that you don’t damage the roots. Light with air ventilated, clean from dust apparently the plant doesn’t like long time with dust on the leaves

Whilst working on the new tree shape remove any obvious dead branches or brown bits which will not only make the tree look nicer but it will let more light in to reach the foliage and encourage new growth. Towards the end of the tree shaping process a slightly ugly gap remains but we sometimes find this can be improved by using a non damaging rope or cable, in an as aesthetic way as possible (we use a dark colour rope of cable) to internally pull a branch to close the gap. From the aesthetic point of view we sometimes use a brown paint to disguise any excessively visual cuts on the branches) Removing weeds as soon as they appear is a good way of ensuring that valuable moisture is not lost. Mulching also reduces moisture loss from the top layers of soil. Conifers are characterised by their foliage, which is either scale-like for example in pines or short, spiky and needle-like as in junipers. The foliage comes in various shades of green, gold, silver or blue and variegated combinations; some such as Cryptomeria japonica take on reddish hues in winter. Dwarf conifers are not actually dwarf, but are just slower growing. They will eventually become larger and could outgrow their space. This is fairly common with most conifers as they grow, and they can be replaced when it happens. However, their size can be controlled to some extent by pruning and trimming them.Since the pruning has been performed in the winter there will be new growth in the next few months.
