Produce a scoring system to be used in conjunction with FIFO calculations for each utilisation strategy Question 12: Please provide any evidence on ecological benefits that could be delivered by new measures or limits on the Norway pout fishery in UK waters.

Bumbling along the bottom, thousands of feet beneath the waves, the blobfish's world is cold, dark and empty. The water presses in on animals there with more than 100 times the atmospheric pressure we feel on land, making the compressible swim bladders that many surface fish use to control their buoyancy less practical for these deep-sea creatures. Rather, natural selection has equipped the blobfish with exclusively incompressible parts, such as water-filled cells and organs not unlike most of our own. This construction makes the fish neutrally buoyant, neither rising nor sinking, which lets them float motionlessly as they wait for prey, such as snails and other bottom dwellers. The ocean pout belongs to the genus Zoarces in the eelpout family Zoarcidae. Its close relatives include the eastern viviparous blenny and the viviparous eelpout. Distribution: Found around most of the UK, although they are more common in the south and south west of the British Isles. Two respondents were against any form of management changes and instead wanted to keep the fishery open without any additional measures. Both responses highlighted the potential negative socio-economic consequences for Danish fishing communities. Different farmed fish species show variable edible yield proportions, therefore different efficiencies in FMFO utilisation in aquafeed from a food production perspective;

Many respondents believe a change in management approaches for sandeels and Norway pout is required. Opinions varied on the constitution of such management measures but broadly consisted of: Lunchtime Meal Deal for One: Small fish & chips, one side of either peas, curry or gravy and a 330ml can of drink. Available 11.30am – 3pm All these adaptations allow creatures to thrive in the dark abyss of the deep ocean, in one of the harshest environments on our planet. These respondents reported this method as successful, rebuilding populations from very low levels and offered it as way to continue the fishery in a sustainable and efficient way. The development and use of new selective gears were also mentioned, to minimise bycatch. The UK Marine Strategy and the Fisheries Act 2020 highlight the importance of taking an ecosystem-based approach to the management of fisheries and the wider marine environment.

Fish Taco: Lightly battered fish strips, salsa, mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato placed in a soft tortilla Twelve respondents reported that the current measures fail to take an ecosystem-based approach, stating that sandeels are vitally important to the marine ecosystem and sustain large populations of protected sea birds, as well as marine mammals and piscivorous fish. These respondents reported that current TACs fail to consider predator requirements, resulting in reduced food availability for dependent predator species.Question 7: Identifying the sectors involved or impacted, please provide any evidence on the social and economic impacts of sandeel fishing. While these days the blobfish has enough face recognition to make other arguably more charismatic creatures envious, researchers know very little about this enigmatic species. Scientists must infer how it spends its days and what it eats from the physical characteristics of the blobfish's environment and the biological features of fellow deep-sea fish. Ironically, the animal's marquee feature — its signature flab — is not what sets it apart; rather, that's a commonality the fish shares with many other denizens of the deep. The most famous blobfish: Mr. Blobby In the mid-20th century, construction of large dams on the Columbia River in Washington state — the Grand Coulee in 1942 and the Chief Joseph in 1955 — prevented fish from reaching 40% of the watershed’s salmon and steelhead spawning habitat. The impact was devastating for Indigenous peoples in the U.S. and Canada. Tuna: if you are trying for a baby or are pregnant, you should have no more than 4 cans of tuna a week or no more than 2 tuna steaks a week. This is because tuna contains higher levels of mercury than other fish. If you are breastfeeding, there is no limit on how much tuna you can eat. None of the foregoing is accounted for within the current FIFO calculation, and it may be concluded that FIFO is a rather crude mechanism for measuring the utilisation of whole fish as raw material for FMFO.
