About this deal

To lay a level paving slab, clear away the loose soil where you want your slab to go, loosely spread 50-75mm of sharp sand and gently lay the slab on the sand. Put a spirit level on the slab and tap it down with a rubber mallet (or lump of wood if you don’t have one) until it’s firmly set in place. The connector pipes for water butt diverters are usually 50cm long, so try not to set your butt further away from the downpipe than this. Once you have worked out your usage and you know how often you will need to fill up, you can start to work out what size tank you might need. With water tanks, it’s not just a case of buying the biggest thing you can for a couple of reasons. Firstly, water weighs a lot – 1 litre of water = 1kg, which means if you have a 200L tank that’s an extra 200kg you’re carrying around when it’s full! The other reason is that a bigger tank will be more expensive, so it’s best to work out what size you think you will actually need rather than just buying the biggest thing possible. Whilst a water softener isn’t essential, there are some signs that suggest you may benefit from one within your home. If you are struggling to get a lather when you shower, finding your dishwasher isn't cleaning effectively or are continuously cleaning up limescale, grime and soap scum residue, it may be that you have a hard water problem. A water softener could help improve the look, taste and smell of your drinking water, whilst also helping your appliances run more effectively. How do water softeners work? If you are among the estimated 16 million people in the UK who live in a hard water area, our guide to the best water softener might just have the answers you're looking for. From chalky white deposits leaking from your best steam iron to smelly laundry in your washer dryer that even the best laundry detergent can't fix, hard water minerals can wreak havoc in your home and on your appliances. Signs include pesky tidemarks on bathroom fittings, stiff, rough clothes in your tumble dryer, clogged showerheads and smeary glassware. It gets worse: hard water can aggravate and even cause skin conditions such as eczema. Read our guide to garden screening ideas – 7 ways to keep your garden private from nosy neighbours. Fitting the diverter

If you ask for a meter, a company should install it within three months. In areas where free meters are being offered for the first time, this period may be six months. When is it a good idea to consider changing to a water meter? Read our guide to garden pond maintenance tips – how to perk up your pond. Raising the water butt when fitting Firstly, you will need to mount your water tank. The method of doing this will vary based on your tank, but ours came with some threaded bar that uses nuts and washers to attach it. We mounted our tank onto a piece of ply on the side wall by drilling some holes in it and attaching the threaded bars using a washer and a nut. At this point the ply was fixed to the wall, and then we could move the water tank into place and attach it by screwing up the other washers and nuts by the tank. Installing a fill point Once it's fitted, we'll leave you a leaflet giving you all the information you need about your new meter. This includes ways to help you save water, energy and money.Read our guide to 7 lawn care tips to follow for the perfect lawn. Choose the right downpipe for your water butt Now you can fit the diverter. This is the piece of equipment that takes water from the downpipe and channels it into the butt. It’s very important that the diverter is attached to the downpipe below the top level of your water butt, or once the butt is full with rain, the butt will overflow, rather than allowing the water to just continue down the downpipe. The best water softener is the Water2Buy W2B200 Water Softener, which gets the thumbs-up from Mumsnetters and hundreds of other owners for good reason. It produces enough soft water for most families, uses the tiniest amount of power, water and salt consumption is low, and it has a fair price too. How we chose our recommendations As we mentioned before, the tank did not have many useful prebuilt inlet spots, so we had to drill our own to attach the tank connector. We then used a lot of silicone to ensure we wouldn’t have any leaks.

Water butt connecting kits are available if you want to install more than one water butt to a downpipe. The pipe which leads to the sink was then split using another T piece, as the sink has 2 connections (usually used for hot and cold). As we don’t have hot water going to our tank, we just connected both sides to the cold water coming from the pump. Alternatively you could blank off one of the connections, but it would mean that one of your taps/half of your mixer wouldn’t work, so we preferred to connect both to the cold. You can either cut off the downpipe and place the water butt directly below it, with the cut-off pipe going through a hole in the lid, or you can install a rainwater diverter. This is often a better option as it means that an overflow pipe is not required, and it gives more flexibility for sitting the butt.
